Garages/tyre centres open, can I use them? - lucklesspedestrian

Noticed today on the BBC website that garages (not just petrol stations) are one of the businesses that are exempt from the shutdown and are allowed to stay open. Indeed, Kwik Fit and national Tyres are both open today. This seems a little confusing/contradictory given the advice to stay at home. If the governement endorses garages staying open does this mean it's okay to use them? If not then what's the point?

any thoughts?

I don't think it's confusing at all. Of course it's essential that that people can get their cars repaired. Not only for key workers, but also so that everyone else can go food shopping etc.

Of course, if it isn't essential for you now, then you shouldn't go.

Whatever is open is there to service essential demand. If you don't need it, don't use it.

Of course it is ok to use them - that is why the government has allowed them to stay open.

The advice to stay at home is when you go out without a good reason ie to buy food/go to chemists/fix a car etc.

If all the garages and workshops closed down the residents in Greenwich would be in big trouble as our vehicles need constant maintenance, not because they're old and falling apart but because our RCV's are very maintenance heavy due to being double shifted requiring servicing every 6 weeks.
