Just a thought.

If your service is due and you can't get out due to Govt advice and miss your annual service (I know some leeway is allowed), then your warranty may be forfeit.

Some major hotel chains have allowed cancellations due to the circumstances. I wonder if the car manufactures will allow extended grace periods?

Most dealerships have collection & delivery drivers. They need to keep work coming in.

We have a hotel booked for Budapest end may for a class reunion.

IHG say cancel if you want right up to the day before.

Flight from Amman to London this friday, Booked direct with BA, cancel if you wish. refunded as travel vouchers or Cash refund if you wish.

Both of the above are a responsible international business.

All business will need our support, so try to help them.

I had my eye appt the other day and staff were taking good precautions, everyone getting a dollop of hand sanitiser and told to use it.

Dr youngrovergirl doing her clinics as normal.

Spa and Sauna currently open, went yesterday.

Chlorinated water is a good cleanser, the virus cannot live on it. Good old fashioned soap and water is one of the best defences, but wash up to your elbows and also wash your face and neck with soap and water as well.

Above all, stay safe!

Dr young Zippy123 is an A&E doctor and hasn't even been given a face mask.

In fact her Trust has refused to issue them because the staff are not fit tested.

There is only one hazmat suit for the department.

Some of the staff at the eye clinic had facemasks and gloves, others not.

Glad to hear that chlorinated water is bad for the vursthatcannotbenamed - I went swimming at my (almost deserted) local municpal pool earlier today. Came out (after the shower at the end) all squeky clean. Glad my car won't (barring issues) need servicing until the end of the year.

I'm more concerned with all the utility company workers if they go off sick in large numbers - who's going to keep our water/sewerage, gas and especially electricity going - after all they don't run themselves and need TLC from time to time!

Maybe some volunteering is in order - I've been twidling my thumbs for best part of three years now after leaving the Construction Industry.

If your service is due and you can't get out due to Govt advice ....

Provided 'Govt advice' is simply advice, I shall use my own skill and judgment about taking a car for servicing. Both cars are booked in in the next few weeks, and as long as the workshop is prepared to take them, so shall I. Unless stricter 'advice' appears I suppose, but up to now we don't live in that sort of police state. It must be fairly simple to hand over a car and take it back without passing a virus to anyone.

Unless you have existing ill health then my advice is go about you business as usual. Take your car for service as usual. You might get some cold symptoms but if in normal health then nothing worse. Remember that the ruling Global Socialist Elite want to keep the population in a state of fear and compliance. The flow of information from the MSM is being carefuly controlled. Remember the Millennium Bug?. Remember Project Fear? Don't be manipulated!

Most garages will carry on working normally, it's either that or go out of business, not enough cashflow to pay mechinics full sick pay i'd wager so unless they are really ill they'll be working as normal, just like most of the privately employed working population not involved in the leisure side of things.

Just use some common sense and increase your own personal hygiene, paying particular attention to things that get touched or used by many others, eg door handles and handrails, things i try not to touch with my bare hands if at all possible.

Whether the govt will use force to isolate older people in due course we will have to wait and see, i hope not because once the state gets the taste for such measures and finds the population easier to control this way they'll use these methods again when it suits.

The virus is a real threat, particularly for the elderly and those with other health issues.

But the media promote hysteria, not a balanced responses. You could be forgiven for the belief that a trip to the garage is a virtual guarantee of infection and subsequent death.

At its peak the worst case government figures suggest that up to 20% of people may be off work. A crude assumption may be that a further 20% will either be infected but not yet off work, or at work with minor symptoms.

So 4 (at least) out of 5 people you may meet in the showroom or at the service desk won't be infected. You will not be having an intimate relationship with them, probably signing a work docket and handing over the keys - perhaps 5 minutes.

Hand sanitiser before entering the showroom and immediately after leaving. On collection same process + wipe contact surfaces in car (door handles, steering wheel, switches) with tissue moistened with hand sanitiser.

Even in the worst case peak scenario the real risk is very low - greater than being struck by lightning, but massively removed from a death sentence. And if you still feel uncomfortable about the risk, get the garage to collect the car, or ask someone young and fit to drop off and collect. We should not manufacture problems but solve them!

I expect to start using disposable gloves from time to time.

The government will not want to get used to this kind of control - forcing people to isolate, companies closing down/large events cancelled - it's going to cost billions of pounds that they don't have by the time we come out the other side.

Oh dear, have you been doing your 'research' on the internet again?

Regarding the Millennium Bug - surely it went well as people and companies actually solved the issue before it's 'time' was up rather than putting it's head in the sand?

Precisely that. And as regards to 'Project Fear', we haven't even left the EU yet.

"Remember that the ruling Global Socialist Elite want to keep the population in a state of fear and compliance."

I'm getting tired of your one-track mind, Joe. You've been reading too much Kafka, and it's getting boring.

It seems you take every opportunity to rehea*** your tiresome conspiracy theories in which some imagined left-wing threat holds the UK in thrall.

There is as much evidence to suggest fears about the millennium bug were real and had to be dealt with by software engineers as evidence to the contrary and even if the latter were true, there is no evidence to suggest it was anything more than a myth.

The phrase "Project Fear" was initially used in the Scottish Referendum campaign in 2014, then as a label attached by Brexiteers (of whatever political persuasion) to propaganda attempts by Remainers to influence people's thinking. There's no evidence it was a concerted left-wing thing - indeed the Labour Party declared it would have nothing to do with what it described as something Tory.

What is even more worrying is that it seems you are ready to defy government advice or any other social controls put in place to control the spread of COVID-19. That could be very dangerous for the rest of society, if too many people think like you.

The millennium bug was 'real' to the extent that some elderly computer systems, still running, were in Fortran or other early languages, and they simply weren't coded to handle dates after 1999. Because this was anticipated those systems were either 'fixed' or replaced. At the time I supported small database systems which I duly checked over to make sure they would be OK. Then I retired .....

My situation is further complicated with the MOT due 1 April. Car was booked in for service and MOT next week so I have just brought it forward to this Thursday although I won't be able to get a courtesy car then. Like others, I will still be using the car when self isolating (73 years old), just to get to and from my allotment so getting the MOT is essential.

"I will still be using the car when self isolating (73 years old), just to get to and from my allotment..."

Will that be allowed, I wonder?

My wife still works full-time and I take her to work every morning. I'm 74 and if going out in the car is not allowed it's going to be a big problem.

Any - Self Isolating and Car Servicing - nellyjak

My vehicle WILL be going for it's service and MOT in early April...unless I am personally in the midst of a Covid-19 crisis at the time and simply not well enough to do it. (I'm over 70)

I certainly don't how on earth they can ever police/enforce a ban..they can ask and suggest..and we will all take the necessary care and precautions I'm sure.

Any - Self Isolating and Car Servicing - Andrew-T

Will that be allowed, I wonder?

Many things are not 'allowed', but still happen, especially on the road. :-)

Did anyone watch the final Last Tango yesterday? What looked like a 14-year-old lad pinching a car and driving from Sowerby Bridge to Brid and back ? Without crashing ... Hmmmm ...

2018 Mazda CX3 due for service on wednesday-a 2 hour slot is necessary. Aged 72-Live 5 miles from dealership-so will probably taxi back home and return within 2 hours.

Last year went shopping, had coffee, used library. Not this year.

Might ask them to deliver car later in the day--but I doubt if that is available.

I will definitely not cancel the service-things might get worse later?

Quite a few of us, even if with a few exceptions our outlook might be on a par with the over 70's, its part of what makes this a room worth leering about in.

I was a few months ago. As usual, I personally will service our cars that need servicing (TR7 and Audi A8; the Peugeot 2008 is too new) in isolation this summer, on our driveway just outside the garage. Oil for the Audi was delivered last week, and on a recent village litter pick I found a discarded 25 litre container which will be ideal for storing old engine oil. I shall wash my hands and face afterwards.

10 years ago I was on Chemo & self isolating (it was called staying in at home in those days)

2 cars, 2 x MoT & 2 services.

8.15 am Mechanic on way to work parks his car & takes the Xtrail away.

Lunchtime Xtrail returns & Xedos is off to be fettled.

5pm Mechanic appears with the Xedos, 2 MoTs & 2 invoices

I wrote a cheque for the total & he went off home.

Phoned the garage the next day to thank them for helping me out.

It's just organisation & knowing a trusted garage is doing a good job.

Any - Self Isolating and Car Servicing - Avant

I never knew that, FB. So glad that clearly the chemo was successful - good to know.

The Xedos was I believe a much underrated car, which for some reason never sold as well for Mazda as Toyota has managed with the Lexus brand.

>>So glad that clearly the chemo was successful

I go for a colonoscopy (camera up) job every few years. The surgeon I had retired - I was sent to another hospital & the opening words of the Doctor were - "Who's a really lucky boy?" - having read my history. Very few survive as long as me with a late late diagnosis.

June this year will be 10 years - a Bottle of 10 year old Malt for the GP & Cream Cakes for the staff.

Trip to Hospital & a cheque for the Oncology Department - I gave them a cheque on the 5th Anniversary but it will double for 10 years

Good on yer FB. The NHS is a truly wonderful and precious thing, even if it could be better managed and more efficient. Those of us who have survived the big C should certainly reflect our gratitude in a way we think appropriate. Best wishes for the next ten years.

Congratulations, FB. You have done very well.

I too am on periodic check-ups, having had successful surgery for rectal cancer in 2018. Fortunately it was caught early and no further treatment was necessary.
