Just wondering if it is still common practice to put a smear of silicone grease on water pump O rings these days?

Years ago Vauxhall fitted water pumps with an off set pully which allowed the belt to be tensioned by twisting the face of the pump. If you had to tension the belt after a year or so the pump would usually leak if the seal had not been lubricated.

Pass on whether to use silicon, but a tip I saw the other day was to avoid the usual rubber O rings and use the ones used on aircon systems.

Due to the extremes of heat and cold they are far more robust and won't dry out like cheap rubber.

Silicone is fine, just don’t use Vaseline, it can cause the rubber to swell
