Amazing memories some people have - i haven't a clue what i paid, or how many lessons i had. Did pass first time though.
Taught by driving instructor from the local Fire Brigade, doing a "foreigner", and using his own vehicle, officially a Thames 307E van, otherwise a Ford Anglia 105E van.
4 speed floor change gearbox, synchromesh only on 2,3 and 4 and how i learned to parallel park !
Day of my test i was supposed to use that van, but for some reason (memory loss again !) it became unavailable at the last minute.Told my foreman when i got to work, he had a word with the manager, and i was allowed to use one of the company cars, an HA Vauxhall Viva which i had never even sat in before, the test centre was only about quarter mile away from work, so - off we go, me driving, (foreman then walked back to work - "you'll be ok")
On the test i was so nervous that for about the first 20 minutes i had severe shakes in my left leg (ideal for clutch control !)
First car i ever drove (a surprise 17th birthday present) was my dad's Victor FB, with the 3 speed column change and front bench seat, replaced eventually by a Victor FD which my dad bemoaned evermore as the worst car he ever owned.
My best story re " what did you learn to drive in?? " is an ex colleague who aged 15 saved up and bought an old Cortina, parked it up at least two streets away from where he lived (so his dad wouldn't find out) and got away with running it for about 18 months until he moved on, ( surprisingly i think young ladies figured somewhere in the scenario) and yes - he also passed first time !
