I have two cars where insurance is due for renewal on 29th March. I am going on holiday for an extended period, mid Feb to early April and my insurer will not issue renewal docs any more than 30 days ahead of renewal. We will be out of the country all of the thirty day period.

I have tried getting quotes from other insurers but all seem to be exercising the same 30 day rule. Any advice???????????????

Cancel the policies and take out new insurance.

Garage the cars, SORN them and take out new insurance when you return, although this will mean neither will be covered for anything happening to them.

Can't you renew remotely when the time comes, or will you be somewhere without communication ('phone/internet)?

Suggest put in details for 29 days hence and when you find an insurer you fancy dealing with, ring them up and explain the situation and dates required, chances are they'll work something out for you.

Don't forget Direct Line and some others (NFU if i recall) are not on comparison sites but DL for one have their own get a quote website and are very good to deal with on the phone.

If your own insurer can't see a way around this issue it suggests to me best look elsewhere.

Some insurers (not sure which though) do operate in a 60-day window. It might be worth (if this site doesn't have such details) going to Money Saving Expert and seeing if they do, as it's likely it'll be update in this regard more often, as insurance advice is one of its major aspects.

You could try going to an insurance broker, you know, a real person, and have a one to one discussion. I’m sure they would work with you to find and offer a solution as they will be keen to have you as a customer. My wife has had her car insurance through a broker in the past and the same one helped me out very favourably when I had difficulty getting a decent quote when I took on a second car for myself. Cost-wise they were also competitive.

These days most insurance companies have all the documents accessible on their internet site when you take out a policy. I don't recall my current insurer sending through documents - any I needed I printed out.

So unless you are unable to access the internet whilst away, just go online and you will be able to confirm cover. Most insurers and comparision sites will hold details for a number of months so if you input personal details before you go you are unlikely to have to redo this. They will simply ask for any changes and requote.

The vast majority of car insurance policies from the big players auto renew, as long as they have valid card details or a direct debit mandate.

Other than a quick check of the email to check they haven't ramped the price up massively, I've not actively done anything to renew my car insurance in about the last 4-5 years.

Indeed they do, and usually with a hike of about 10%. Much of that increase will magically disappear when you phone and grumble about it. So don't let a policy auto-renew without at least checking.
