Is it worth upgrading to halogen bulbs and are there any problems in doing that?

I've found using Osram nighbreakers very effective. They give a much better light for the same wattage.

I've used both Philips and Osram upgraded bulbs in the past, Osrams in presently, which make depends on which are on offer at any given time, i've read others consider them to be shorter lived than standard, this is not my experience.

Big improvement in my Toyota and as identical dimensions the beam patterns are as designed, unlike some of the cheap leds being sold now where the light source is not the same as OE hence beams all over the place causing glare to others.

Yes I upgraded the Civic dip beam to Philips extreme and a worthwhile improvement in amount of light, and a decent pattern which appears safe to other users. So on balance I would go ahead.

What bulbs do you have at the moment. I would think they're halogen?

Standard off the shelf from Halfords, some bulbs advertise up to 150% more light but wether this pans out or not I don't know.

I think Penumbra's point was that in your initial post you say, "upgrading to halogen". This suggests the current ones are not halogen, but i can't see that being the case on a 2008 car. Surely it would either be halogen or xenon (i don't think LED headlamps were on the go back then)?, and if they were xenon, going to halogen probably wouldn't be an 'upgrade'.

I've got my terminology wrong, it's the modern bulbs such as are advertised to give you anything up to 150% more light that I mean.

Apologies - wasn't being pedantic, but I half assumed you perhaps meant upgrade to Xenons

which if I remember correctly were an option on the V70 but that would obviously mean sourcing the kit from a breakers somewhere.

Your idea of a bulb upgrade is the best bet. Osram Nightbreakers or Bosch Gigalight are both reasonably priced. They give a much "whiter" light than standard halogen bulbs which means things like road signs, pedestrians etc show up more clearly.

"Penumbra" - what an illuminating moniker for a contribution on light! Congratulations.

I was originally going to use Osram.
