I found that going on weekends, even comparing to outside the rush hour on a weekday is really cheap now, perhaps even less than a few years ago. Some advance tickets for longer journeys are very cheap as yours appears to confirm.

Normally on longer journeys my car is far cheaper (e.g. for my holiday in the West Country) and about matches the cost for local ones, but occasionally some amazing deals are there.

Wanted to take yrg to Londinium by train this weekend for dentist... £57 round rip for 2 without underground.

Byses replaceing trains this weekend part of the journeys, so going by car... can park free at dentist in Ealing.

Alledgedly the Liverpool st to Norwich commuter line are the most expensive.

Let the train take the Strain - Scotland not by car £15.30 - Smileyman

Advance tickets £43.05

Off-peak tickets with Network Railcard (Costs £30, valid for 1 year, up to 4 can travel together) £37.90 for two - mostly by train, only a short bus journey.

Using a contactless credit card (or Oyster card but that is more work) single fare across London is £2.80 at weekends.

Ealing is the other side of London, near the A40 / A406 junction at Hanger Lane underground station. I dread to think of the road journey, A12 - A406 or A12 - M25 - A1 (M) then A406, traffic congestion in places shouts out to me.

Possibly the only reason for doing the trip as you describe is the free parking, and possibly missing football crowds at Stratford, but West Ham will be playing away this coming weekend!

Thanks for the reply. Network disruption part of col-lst.

But with swmbo's back don.t fancy the bus-train-bus ttrain-underground and then return, hovering in queues as the bus drivers make people wait on the station forecourts before boarding, plus waiting time. Only 2 would have gone maybe if the train-bus replacements were not messing it up.

3 of us and a dog to Ealing, (although the dog won't see the dentist). ticket prices when i looked £84 someting, 1 network railcard, swmbo and 2 seniors, Sis in law and orb. add to that 6 X £2.80 and the central line noise which would frighten Blod the dog.

Sadly the reason for doing it by car is door to door slightly quicker, a comparison being Colchester to Ealing 3 tickets as above same price as Colchester to Edinburgh which is 4 times the distance. Believe me, I don't enjoy driving in London, Route by the way if all well Colchester A12 the M25j28-23 the A1 down to brent cross and north circ to ealing common.

then reverse,

Earlyish on a saturday going it;s about 1 hr 40 minutes Nice caff in Ealing Broadway mall for full english brekkie and real coffee £5.95.

Added bonus comes free with using the X77 bus from Glasgow to Ayr, you might meet me for free but not this weekend as I will be using it to visit sunny Glasgow for drinks aplenty whilst on a Stag. Probably be in my bed a jabbering wreck by 6pm.

Would love to but unfortunately I’ll be at work and on a post New Year detox. Always enjoy a wee night in Edinburgh but while it’s by far the more beautiful Glasgow is more fun.

Have you got a "Two Together" Railcard?

Cost is thirty quid (or £10 worth of Tesco vouchers if you have any). It will knock a third (£20) off your trip to Edinburgh but also a third off any other trips you might take whilst youngrovergirl completes her recovery.

As above SWMBO has a network railcard, I have a senor and sister in law has a senior.

Various combinations of the cards give different prices.

For our trip the newtwork railcard and 2 seniors gave a cheaper option.

1 network railcard (2 travellers) and 1 senior gives a different price..

2 together (or more) gives a different price too.

All complicated.

I booked via the greater Anglia site and the lner site gave different prices as did trainline and GOEuro.

If you have the luxury of planning in advance there are some great bargains. I regularly used the Crosscountry service from Darlington to Glasgow in my working days. Especially when we hosted institute dinners or lunches and drink was taken!! Great train with goodies included on first class and all for around £35 return. Used a similar service from London Charing Cross to Glasgow with a return for about £57. Euston was quicker and fewer stops and was about £78. Pretty good going for the distance involved. As they say: planning is all.

Cheers Concrete

We don't usually comment on typos but this one is delicious. Don Juan or Don Quixote?

Freudian slip?

With a username like oldroverboy.. gotta be Don Quixote, (a dreamer?) (fighting windmills?)

Strangely enough off to Sevilla for a bit of luxe, Paella and a tour of some bodegas in Jerez.

Strangely enough off to Sevilla for a bit of luxe, Paella and a tour of some bodegas in Jerez.

Went to southern Spain last year. Travelled on the trains and long distance buses. Very good service and cheap. On the buses ask for retiro when buying the tickets. For the trains you can buy a Tarjeto Dorado which gives a very useful discount. Enjoy the menu del dias and have a aniseed brandy at breakfast like the locals. Great place, great fun.

Tarjeto Dorado. done 6 euros. Problem is parking in Spain, and hire cars...

train sevilla to jerez cheap enough with discount card and no problems parking.

Very nice Hotel San Gil in Sevilla 65 euros a night inc breakfast wit multi night stays, have stayed before, but book on hotel website. Access to the hotel car park down in a car lift around the very narrow back streets is not for the faint hearted, That is the second reason no car hire!
