Nissan Note - DIY window regulator replacement - Alex Rankin

The driver's side window is refusing to close up. Taken it to garage and they confirmed that the regulator needs replacing but could be anywhere between £200-£300 for parts and labour. What is the general consensus on doing this yourself?

I am a total beginner when it comes to car maintenance, but I have a fair amount of tools. Obviously there are videos out there too.

is it a job worth having a crack at or strictly for the experienced/mechanic?

Cheers

Don't know about Nissans, but if Pugs are anything to go by, the replacement part may cost £100 or more. Garage costs are usually about labour, so it sounds like an hour or so there.

If you are happy about finding the way to take off the door card without damaging it, then replacing the part should be plug-and-play. A manual might advise disconnecting the battery while doing it, tho I guess removing the correct fuse would be simpler. And there may be a rainproof membrane to mend afterwards ....

As said, get a manual. Then find a secondhand one at a breakers, the old fashion ones where you can remove the part yourself. That way you get a practice run where it doesn't matter if you break a clip or something. Will save £££s and quite satisfying to DIY.

Also, find out whether the part you require is shared with any other Nissans or even Renault, as it will improve your hit rate at the breakers.

You probably don't need to visit a breaker's, as parts like this are often available on E-bay for a reasonable price. You won't get the experience of dismantling of course, as the experts have already done that for you, but neither will you get wet or frustrated. You may also find a manual for the Note, but manuals for newer cars tell you less than the older ones IMHO - often because fewer tasks are possible for the DiY person.

Not a difficult job , but loads of different fasteners hold the regulator in the door . May even be riveted to the door inner skin. This is no more than an hours labour at a garage . Very likely to get non genuine Nissan parts to reduce the cost.

Yeah I did see parts advertised for pretty reasonable prices on there. Will have a search around for a manual before committing to it. Thanks

Would suggest not the easiest of jobs, probably take you twice as long as a garage. If riveted you would need to drill out and then re rivete if an electric worm is part of the regulator can be quite dangerous if not used to these. If money is tight buy the part and get price to fit it.
