I can't remember the last time I had spark plugs changed...

I know John F will jump in with his own special advice but if there on the service schedule to be replaced at your particular mileage then there's no harm in authorising there renewal. I now my last car ( Suzuki swift 4x4) needed, according to Suzuki fresh plugs at the third service and for the extra 30 quid it cost I felt it worth It.

£399 is the reasonable quote. all filters, air fuel pollen replaced. all liquids replaced, brake and clutch, antifreeze, spark plugs, any software updates, and importantly wheels off brakes check and cleaning/greasing . bodywork inspection.

I'd expect all those things to be checked....but not necessarily renewed as a matter of course.

just got a quote out of interest for my car ( mokka x) second service according to Vauxhall is £305. and that includes changing the plugs so maybe £399. is a little high?

Not sure what all the above is ORB but I wonder if Vauxhalll would service your car for a more reasonable price? and yes I do see the resemblance between them .

They should be good for 50k miles. Our old Focus is on its third set at 142,000. The only special thing to say is, if changing them yourself, don't overtighten them. Look up the amount of torque needed - it's hardly anything. Garages rub their hands in glee at having to helicoil aluminium heads thanks to amateur mechanics who don't know their own strength!

How much?!!! My old Mazda3 goes on a 6-year service cycle, and even with the MOT on the 'big' 6th year one the total was £501. Yours is not cheap by any means - I would've expected something around the £200 - £250 mark, given how new the car is.

I think my plugs are supposed to get changed every 75k miles as the originals were iridium (expensive). To bad the car's only done 67k. I'm sure they have been replaced though, at least once in its nearly 14 year life.

Iirc the Last time plugs were changed was my Yaris. They got changed at 50,000 Mile's which was three years. Fourth or fifth service. So I guess they must have been iridium ones. Orb are you sure they need changing so soon?

That service schedule doesn't make any mention of different items depending on engine. The 1.0T engine in my Astra (recall ORB's doesn't have this unit) requires spark plugs and air filter at 4 years/80,000 miles. Appears when fitted to a MG they only last 2 years/30,000. Suppose someone has to pay for the 7 year warranty.

I've just put MG GS in the search on ECP. They don't list any of the filters or the plugs. GSF list an oil filter of unknown (to me) brand only. Looks like MG may have you by the short and curlies for the time being.

It depends whether OE plugs have 1, 2 or 4 electrodes - generally plugs last in proportion to the number of electrodes so single electrode only last half as long as twin electrode.

This unscientific suggestion is just as absurd as advising to change oil after 365 days and is purely for the benefit of the garage. Spark plugs do not 'go off' after two years any more than oil does after 1yr. Ask any classic car owner.

When we bought the Pulsar early last year the 3 year service plan was £299 but after some discussion we got it for £0. That makes your "reasonable " quote seem extortionate.

I seem to remember the Focus was small, small, large and that the small services were about £150, the large once nearer £300 including the MOT. Again that makes your quote very expensive.

Currently looking at new motors (to replace the Focus) and Volvo are offering a 5 year plan for £599 which makes your quote seem very very expensive.

Did you not check on servicing before you bought it, we always do. Its a bit late when you have had it for a year.

The servicing costs are what they are, I was commenting, not complaining..

Next year (if i still have it) is a small service, and the last one was invoicedat £95ish, haven't got the invoice to hand, and the selling dealer paid it anyway, 6 weeks after i got the car.

If I had a Newish Jaguar, BMW or mercedes, Range Rover (heaven Forbid) I wouldn't whinge about serving costs.

But if someone sees this post and it makes them reflect before buying, that's ok then.

Given how cheap the car was to buy, you're still well in credit. Just something for secondhand buyers to bear in mind, which may affect the price you or anyone else selling or PXing it gets when the car is under 5 years old.

It's one of the reasons some bigger 'luxury' cars are relatively cheap when sold second hand after about that age, and obviously because they could have a big bill in the near future if some major part fails.

This is a thorough service, i’ve seen a 3 year service at VW where the quote was cheap till i reminded reminded them about Haldex fluid service interval, to which the receptionist looked like i was speaking in algebra.. service ended up costing £720.

I was expecting GB to be along to say something similar especially as they appear to be servicing the brakes!

Two years seems ridiculous. Just had new plugs for the first time on the Forester as its part of 5 year/60,000 mile service.

Cost for that job (which is a pain on Subarus) and the full service was just shy of £400

You've said it for me, i agree completely.

When we had the Hilux from new, obviously i kept it serviced at the main dealer.

This was 2007 on, services were annual, year 1 minor, year 2 major, cont'd, minor was around £170 basically oil change an checkover, major was about £350, but included as the MG a full brake strip clean lube, and all transmission fluids changed except for auto gearbox, two diffs plus transfer box.

What bumped the prices heavily was the cost of oil, circa £70 for 7.5 litres when bought via service (£15 for 5 litres over the counter from parts), i had a chat with the service manager and they were quite happy for me to supply by own 'better' bulk bought oil which reduced those service costs considerably, to be fair i was well looked after both purchase and after sales because i used to deliver a lot of their new cars to the dealership and got on really well with them.

Cost of those MG service parts is a bit steep.

Wifes car has "long life" plugs but I am happy to change them halfway through their expected life span. I check the plugs for gap each year as they can open up a bit which is obviously going to effect coil voltages so I simply have a new set ready to drop straight back in. If they were over £80 (3 plugs on net about £30) a set I would be tempted to clean, gap and put back though. Changing antifreeze on 2nd service is a surprise to me is that correct?

I'm sure they will just check the pad and disc thicknesses, then squirt something out an aerosol at them. Don't think any main dealer would do any different.

You can often get a cheap manufactures service plan on a new car at the time of purchase, however, you can't get that on a pre-reg or nearly new car.

At the end of the day to keep the warranty (which I would advise), you have to pay what the main dealer charges. Although it seems a tad expensive to me.

You save money one way and the dealer/ manufacturer gets it back another. That's life!

What a polluting waste of money! How many miles has it done? It really only needs an oil change (possibly not even that if less than 6000 miles since presumably the one last year) and a new oil filter - surprisingly not included in the above list and of far more importance. And if the engine is the old GM derived de-tuned 4cyl and not the 3 pot turbo, it's hardly more 'complex' than the 40 yr old Triumph slant4 in my TR7.

In the past I have walked away from vehicles with full main dealer servicing, but each to there own.

Yes I am paying for my 7 year warranty, but when the Kia "died" (fuel system failure at 3 years and 8 months old, it was still in warranty as I had paid for servicing to maintain the warranty.

I have never had the money to buy a nearly new car with most of mine being about 10 years old, but every time I change the spark plugs/ do a service ( oil etc ), I noticed the difference right away by putting in new plugs.

I always change the plugs at 20k miles plus air filter, fuel filter every 60k. Oil only every 5k then the oil and filter at 10k. Gearbox oil is changed around the 100k mark. Car is a basic 1.8 petrol engine and now on 267k miles and uses no oil. If you are in the game for the long run it makes sense to have a solid regime for servicing. Certainly when ditching the old plugs and putting the new ones in the car is a little sweeter. Obviously if only keeping the vehicle for a short time or if you are a member of the PCP debt game brigade then just do the basics e.g oil changes every 20k.

Service now done., charged a very reasonable £37.50 half hour for wiring in the dashcan properly, freeing up the 12 accessory socket in the console and removing the trailing wires.

Car returned nice and clean inside and out and no surprises on the invoice.
