So a few months ago I bought my first car and decided to change the stereo to a double din one and put a powered sub in it (completely aware how childish it is), but now the car often won’t start and needs jumping. The lights come on but the car clicks and won’t crank over. I think it’s the sub as other people sound like they have the same problem but I can’t seem to find out how to fix it. I’ve done a bit of research and found I may need a higher output alternator or a capacitor but which one do I need? I’ve disconnected the sub to see if it makes a difference aswell and sometimes if I turn the car on but not the ignition it will just about crank over. Battery is fine by the way.
Thanks

Now just today the lights won’t even come on when I turn the key just the hazard light and info display

I would suggest you get the electronics of the car checked out first . It’s unlikely that an upgraded alternator is going to fix your problem. Why do you need a capacitor, what’s that going to do ? If anything , I would upgrade your battery before anything else

That would have been my reply.....

The electronics have been checked and everything’s ok and wired properly, what battery would you suggest I upgrade to?

Need more info, like what is the power output of amplifiers and how they are wired and do you use system without engine running, as you are then relying on the battery to power all of it.
some systems are extreme power users and need very powerful alternators and high capacity batteries for them to run, so far all we know is its a Corsa with a sub

The amp is 150 watts and wired using a remote cable, rca cable and power cables down the left side of the car. I only use the system when the cars running.

The Corsa was introduced in 1993 . How old is yours , and what engine do you have .?

2013, 1.2l engine

I would upgrade to a battery suitable for a diesel Corsa . Something like an 096 variant . You can’t check a battery solely with a voltmeter.

Alright I’ll look into it, thanks

Do you know of any models or makes that would be suitable?

I would get the charging system tested first as its possible the stereo is putting a larger strain on it, I have fitted over the years a few of these but more powerful and got away with upgrading the battery, more for use when standing without engine running use

A more powerful what? Stereo? Battery? So would upgrading the battery stop the engine not starting?

You still need to get the charging system checked out properly as its possible you may have a faulty battery or alternator, once that has been checked you will know what the problem is, ie fitting the new stereo and sub has brought the problem to light which you may not have known about before

Okay thanks for the help

Are you sure that the radio has been connected correctly. ? The original radio wiring will be different to any aftermarket installation.

Yes the stereo is connected correctly

Yes the stereo is connected correctly
as a matter of interest who did the wiring?, or did you use an adapter block connection?.
not enough info is not getting us very far and it would have helped if we knew what stereo make and model was installed including sub specs, someone else may have installed the same or similar system and could help but as said not enough info

Apologies, as I say I don’t know much about this. The sub is a alpine swe-815 active sub wired using (rca cables) and the stereo is Sony xav-ax1000 wired using an adapter from connects2. The wiring is mostly very simple just plug and play. My battery I believe is a 019
Specs for the sub:
300W Peak Power Handling (100W rms)
Heavy Duty Subwoofer Grill
Frequency Response: 34Hz - 1.5kHz
Impedance: 2x 2O
Sensitivity: 91.0dB/W(1m)
Built-in MXE-M150CKD Amplifier
150W Max Power
Wired Remote Controller for Vol., Freq., Phase Setting
RCA & Speaker Inputs
Stereo output power is 55w

That’s all very well , but what are the specs for the car ? Charging voltage , ignition off , overnight draw? Battery condition? Not sure you have an 019 battery, this is what you would find on a BMW or Mercedes . If it is , it must be hanging out the engine bay .

Where would I find that information?

I think it’s time to take your car to an electronics specialist. He will have all the necessary specs for your vehicle and hopefully have the right equipment to diagnose your problem.

Okay would a Halfords autocentre be able to do this?
|
Unlikely. They may be able to check your hi fi installation, but anything beyond this requires experienced hands . Find a local auto electrical specialist. What part of the country are you located?
