Dangerous oil leak - FoxyJukebox

There is an old landrover that lives in my residential street which for many months has been leaking oil when parked overnight. The vehicle is used regularly( taxed and mot'd) and is parked in the same local region most days. Recent wet weather has revealed the familiar rainbow oil spill covering a large busy area where the vehicle was last parked. Naturally, this is a dangerous skid threat.

Is this an offence?

Possibly:

Section 161(1) of the Highways Act 1980, "without lawful authority or excuse, depositing oil or allowing oil to be deposited from a motor vehicle on the highway thereby endangering users of the highway."

Perhaps a note on the windscreen and a bag of sharp sand, £2 from the builders merchant, may do the trick. Can be tricky fix on an old engine but certainly needs addressing.

Sharp sand will certainly fix the oil leak... Permanently.

If there are any bikers on your street, maybe talk to them?. Firstly to warn them, but also, they might have a more 'pro-active' approach to dealing with the Landy owner?!

I was a biker who had this problem with a near neighbour. They would regularly fill their diesel van and then park it with a couple of wheels on the kerb, resulting in a fuel spill. I complained several times, to no avail, but when I threatened to report them to their (national) employers, their attitude changed.

They became a (born again) biker themselves in their retirement and complained loudly about such hazards without realising the irony!

Ah yes the joys of diesel as a biker! The only time I ever had an accident on two wheels was the result of a diesel spill. In the rain - dangerous - but in the rain and dark (as I was) just lethal. Diesel seems to 'sit' on the tarmac in a way that engine or transmission fluid doesn't. In town you might be lucky and smell it before you hit it but at speed you've got no chance.

Or maybe just mention it to the Landy owner...

  • When you mount a portrait of a Land Rover against the wall, remember to put newspapers on the floor for the oil leaks.

  • A Land Rover doesn't leak oil - they're only marking their territory.

  • You know its a Land Rover when you stop at the fuel station and ask the attendant to check the fuel level and fill up the oil.

  • All Land Rovers are like women - They leak when you don't want them to, moan on long journey's, embarrass you in front of friends and spend more money than you ever expected once you've commit yourself to one.

Correct. All the series Land Rover leak. The only variable is how much. It's an anti-corrosion measure.

When we had an old Series 2a back in the late 80s we always kept a large piece of thick cardboard underneath the vehicle to capture the leaks. Come bonfire night, the cardboard was a great way of starting the fire!

Problem solved, he needs a big bit of cardboard.

I used to spend many, many hours trying to fix leaks. Engine, gearbox, transfer box - you name it, it leaked if it contained oil. You could fix one leak and then six months' later another one would appear. Then the first one would leak again...

I really cannot understand why the Series Land Rovers go for such silly prices now. I can understand the Defenders more since they came with decent TDi or TD5 engines but the Series ones were pretty dire, apart from the V8 - as long as you could cope with the fuel consumption.
