2.1 was not the best diesel. Whether the engine was in a MB or some other car such as Infiniti models it was criticised as being rough & noisy.

New MBs have a 2.0 l diesel which is receiving better reviews (assuming any diesel can get good reviews).

IMHO a diesel is not really what is needed in a coupe/soft top . a nice straight 6 cylinder petrol is surely the minimum

Depends on budget and how many miles you’ll do. The 6cyl suits the car much better, it’s quieter and more muscular plus the 6cyl cars tend to sell easier at the other end too. A few mpg more will make very little difference over say 10,000 miles but if you’re closer to 20k p/a then the 4cyl may make more sense. It’s a very robust engine and still pulls well in the heavier car. I wouldn’t buy either unless you can afford a good approved used example with a full main dealer history and you can afford the cost of maintaining it properly however, I’m assuming with an SLK already that you can.

Chap i know runs private hire Mercs with that engine, usually sells them on with a shade over 400k miles during which time they've been very little trouble, they are however serviced sensibly by an MB indy, none of this leaving the oil in till its treacle.
