SCRAPPING A UK REGISTERED CAR IN ANOTHER EU COUNTR - chrisbrowne28

My vehicle is registered in the UK (Northern Ireland). I recently spent two weeks in the Republic of Ireland and the engine became damaged beyond repair. It will not get back on the road without a new engine, and it is not financially sensible to do so. The car is 400 miles away from my home, so it would be expensive to get it towed back simply for the purpose of scrapping it.

I have spoken to a garage in Cork who will have the car scrapped on my behalf.

My question is – if I have the car scrapped at an Irish ATF, and receive a certificate of destruction, will the UK authorities accepted this as having it properly disposed of? I know the ATFs have to meet EU standards, so I am hoping we are okay.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Vehicle registration and tax in NI is handled by the UK DVLA Swansea so contact them.

There is a DVA (Driver and vehicle agency) NI but they only handle vehicle and driver testing.

I'd expect DVLA to accept return of logbook and a certificate from another EU country as sufficient evidence of scrapping. Alternatively, particularly if (as they can in UK) ATF sells it on to go back on road then advise DVLA it's permanently exported.

Only other random thought is whether UK/Eire Common Travel Area or any reciprocal Eire/NI arrangements make a difference.

DVLA will be closed tomorrow for Bank Holiday in England/Wales. IIRC last Monday in Aug is an NI holiday too.

I'd suggest a call when they re-open on Tuesday.

You could just write to the DVLA to tell them you have exported the car:

That's what I did when mine died in France. No trouble at all, and even got the road tax back.
