Hi I have a chrysler voyager 2.8 CRD

Car runs fine until the lights are switched on . the instruments would switch off and the engine will stall . Both at idle and driving .

I have disconnected the lights at the headlight , replace the light switch and swapped around the relays but made no differencs

I have also replaced the alternator ,and fuse box . While testing the alternator I measured the voltage and was normal , however it went up to 20 volts before cutting out !

Assuming that the voltage regulator part of the alternator was faulty , I replaced the alternator but keeps cutting out whenever the lights are switch on

Anyone have any ideas ?

If the battery/alternator voltage is reaching 20 volts , then the electronics will shut down to prevent them getting fried . Sounds like a problem with the alternator regulation or wiring system . Have you tried running the engine with the alternator wiring disconnected?

I had a similar type of problem years ago on a BMW 5 series E34, When the lights were switched on the engine would cut momentarily. After much diagnosing, measuring and metering I traced it to the battery earth to the body which is under the rhs rear seat.For some reason it had been left loose in the past and had got hot and was high resistance to the body.

Cleaned up replaced the earthing bolt and all fine.
