Fiat and Renault to merge? - Sofa Spud

OK, my my heading was a bit sensationalist but it's reported that Fiat Chrysler is in talks with Renault about forming ties.

Fiat and Renault to merge? - Avant

I think it was the late Prof.Garel Rhys who once forecast that there would eventually be only six car manufacturers left in the world - plus Morgan.

This was some years ago so I don't know which ones he had in mind to survive. My (completely uninformed) guess would be that four of them will be:

Toyota

VAG

Ford

PSA

Maybe Fiat / Renault if the talks do lead to a merger?

Daimler-Benz (if that's the correct name) could be in with a good chance.

I don't think the professor had the growth in Chinese manufacturing in mind. There seems a good chance that other makes may become Chinese-owned - not necessarily a disaster if Volvo's successful autonomy under Geely is anything to go by.

I can understand it if Tata want to offload JLR - losses getting worse, and they just can't find a way of making Land Rovers reliable, which is a scandal considering how much they cost.

Sorry but your list as a forecast is well out. The Chinese are going to become dominant imo. 2017 four Chinese companies were in the top 20 by volume. Plus I like to think Suzuki might still be around seeing as they are at number 11 now. True they dont sell hugely in the UK but they sell a lot worldwide.

If the two brands do merge, can we expect a new name for the combined marque, perhaps formed from the two original names?

"Fault", for example?

Oh very good Bilboman, raised a Sunday smile that one!!

Reminds me of the Heinz means Beanz adverts from 30 years ago.

At that time, IBM made mainframe disks in Mainz, Germany. They had quality

problems with new higher capacity / higher density disks - hence "Mainz means Faultz"

Four times in their companies' history,Ford and Toyota have discussed merging-the original Mr. Toyoda was a Ford trained engineer.

Nice one, i like it!,

Slightly different, but a few months ago on a local radio station, they were asking listeners to get in touch if hey had a nickname (or knew someone else with one), and explain what it meant. One person got on touch to say a work mate had the nickname 'two soups', because his name was Baxter Campbell

Fiat have been struggling to fund product development for years and have been actively looking for a partner. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened sooner but with tight finances, an over-unionised workforce and a dated range of platforms and engines what do they have to offer any potential partner? Only the 500 has kept the firm alive but one model can’t save them.

I have read bits and pieces in motoring magazines about Fiat being 'rebranded' as electric only, and to that end i was impressed by the design and execution of the Centoventi concept shown at the Geneva motor show. A car which is very likely to be the next Panda, it comes with one battery for a range of 62 miles, but up to four others can be added, modular fashion, for up to 310 miles.

How can Fiat be re-branded EV - it's behind everyone else in development both of EVs and cleaner petrol/diesels, that's why it wanted a deal with Tesla to reduce the EU fines.

Fiat have got little funds and desire to spend serious money developing new models and engines.

They have effectively told the Turkish company Tofas used to build its commercial vehicles to extend the life of the Doblo and Fiorino/Qubo small vans and MPVs and provide another face lift with some minor engineering changes as they still do not have a plan for their commercial range.
Likewise the Fiat Talento will remain as a re-badged Renault Trafic until Renault build a new large van model.

Or if we're a bit more well-heeled we might own a Tesla-Benz !

Fiat and Renault to merge? - Engineer Andy

Seems this rumour was true - confirmed in today's Telegraph:

Fiat and Renault to merge? - focussed

Reading my news feed this morning from orange.fr it seems that Fiat Chrysler have withdrawn from this deal - it's off.

The constructor Fiat Chrysler (FCA) has withdrawn in the night of Wednesday to Thursday its proposal of merger with Renault to form the number 3 world of the automobile, failing to obtain a fast commitment of the French group, braked by the State shareholder .

The Italian-American car manufacturer Fiat Chrysler announced in a statement that it was withdrawing its offer of merger with Renault, saying that "the political conditions (were) currently not met in France to carry out such a rapprochement".

I believe the main sticking point was concerning the French goverment's insistence on no French manfuacturing plant closures or job losses. How very 1970s of them.

Fiat and Renault to merge? - daveyjp

Maybe the French Government understand how important manufacturing is to the Country.

A few thousand Ford engine plant staff will certainly be wondering why UK Governments don't.
