Toyota Celica - Rusty, but is too rusty? - Eduard Cosmin Avasiloaei

Hi,

I have been looking at this lovely Celica owned by lady petrolhead, all full service history, but as seen in the link below there is some rust present.

It doesn't look too worrying as far as I can tell, but is it worth the money or would it need quite a bit of investment to sort out the rust.

Last price is £2400.

That rust looks cosmetic rather than structural to me. A few days with a wire brush and some gunk (recommended by Gordonbennet) should sort it. I don't have any idea about Celica prices but I wouldn't want to pay top dollar for one in that condition albeit that many 13 year old cars will be exactly the same.

What's the service history like. The MoT history looks ok apart from owners not checking tyres.

See MOT history. No mention of rust. Recent signs of neglected maintenance.

The rust pictured doesn't give great concern because the suspension and subframe are heavy gauge, the rust on the spare wheel well is easily treated, it would be other parts such as inner sills that i'd be looking more carefully at.

Whilst the car looks nice so the top side has been attended, from the MOT history i get the impression the undersides have been neglected and maintenance hasn't been great, though that is fixable, i don't think this is a bad car by any means, just no one with any mechanical knowledge/interest has owned it so it's like 95% of all cars out there, washed polished and driven, servicing being a dull necessity so bare minimum rules apply.

Sounds like it needs a full brake overhaul, this could be pricey because i suspect it needs several calipers as well as new discs and pads all round, hopefully the exhaust leak hasn't been fixed with gungum or it needs a new exhaust, it needs one or several new ball joints and the wheels aligning after, also those nails (still) in the tyres could well be cutting the inner sidewalls to shreds with every revolution of the wheels, so probably a full set of tyres is on the cards.

There's £1000 for a kick off, and thats if you can do some of the work yourself, so whatever this car should be priced at i'd want it £1000 less than the genuine value of the car for just those fixes.

As for the rust, lots of rubbing down and wire brushing, but for once i wouldn't be recommending Bilt Hambers or Dinitrol's wax undercoatings, i would put a liberal coat of ACF50 on the rust, a 4 litre bottle should do the job, then re-apply every spring.
