2011 Seat Leon - 1.6 TDi - 106k Miles - Car Service €1,500 - Seems Steep? - Chesty

Just sent my seat leon in for its annual service. I was shocked when i got the bill.

The garage had rang to say it would be €900. This price included a new EGR valve replacement. However when I went to collect the car they hit me with a bill for $1502.

I nearly hit the floor. 900 was bad enough. But it had now spiralled to 1,500. I asked for an itemised bill so I could run the costs by you guys for a second opinion.

Any mechanics out there that could quickly run your eye over it and give a second opinion?

Thanks

Not a mechanic, just a reasonably well informed car owner but I'd observe as follows:

The EGR valve is a weak spot on that engine. My Roomster had same issue, fortunately covered by warranty but the quote to me was around £1k.

There's usual main dealer rip off pricing for oil, anti-freeze etc but the two items that leap out are the Front brake kit and 2*rear shocks. Did you authorise that work?

Thanks for getting back Bromptonaut.

I just sent it in for a routine service and the EGR replacement.

The rest of the work just went ahead as the garage saw fit.

Has it had the emissions update? If so, the EGR may be covered by VAG:

...how can I tell if it has had the emissions update?

...how can I tell if it has had the emissions update?

If you go onto Seats web site and look for emissions update they have a place where you can put in the cars VIN number and they will tell you if it has been updated. If your car has been in a main dealer for any reason it will have been done. A failed EGR valve within two years of the update wave been replaced free or in many cases refunded if you have already paid.

Every time my Skoda goes to the dealer I'm asked about the emissions update and every time I refuse.

Your lucky Bromptonaut there are hundreds of thousands of VAG owners who had the fix applied without even being asked and plenty who had it applied even when the dealer was told not to. You must have one of the better dealers.

Steep? Almost vertical!! A salutary lesson here.....so much unnecessary work. Air and pollen filters can be cleaned with a stiff brush (the ones in our 18yr old Focus are original), coolant does not need to be changed......and as for the totting up of seals, rings, bolts etc - the mind boggles. Thank goodness I learned how to service a car as an impecunious student. I bet they didn't bother to clean and grease the brake pipes.

I'll leave debate about brushing out filters to others but the seals, rings etc are presumably required for a dealer standard repair. If you or I want to chance re using seals that's out prerogative but not what I'd expect in a franchised workshop.

I suspect the coolant needed to be drained as part of the EGR replacement. Is it possible an EGR cooling fault could cause coolant contamination so that replacement is advised.

<< I suspect the coolant needed to be drained as part of the EGR replacement. Is it possible an EGR cooling fault could cause coolant contamination so that replacement is advised. >>

Last year I had the cambelt and waterpump changed on my Pug 207SW. The original coolant was still blue, so it went back in with a bit of a top-up. It's still blue. So I would have thought the same might have been done in this case - but that's a daft idea at a dealership aiming to maximise profit I suppose.

Was thinking the same. My Polo had the EGR cooler done under the same 2yr warranty.

Its not really a warranty its called trust building measures and unlike a warranty its at VAG,s discretion, you get no paperwork so there is no record of having been done and VAG can hide the figures, and there is no warranty on the replaced part. I know of someone that had four RGR valves replaced within the two years and at two years and three weeks VAG were wanting £1400 for a fifth.

Ignoring whether the EGR could have been replaced under the trust building measures (worth asking the dealer - you need a strict FSH though) this is mainly a question of whether you had given permission to do additional work.

Clearly all the filters are normal service items and myself I'd never want a garage to dust off existing ones!

EGR replacement on a 1.6CR tdi is a labour intensive job due to its bulkhead location (can involve partially dropping subframes and removing a driveshaft (depends on the car) - you also need to always fit new seals as they are prone to leaking. I actually thought they would have needed more coolant than they showed.

There is also extra work involving brakes, rear shocks and tyrepresure monitoring.

All this adds up

Dick Turpin Garages strike again.

Any proper garage has you sign a work order when you book it in for a service so you know what you are in for.

Anything over and above this, and they should phone you for authorisation, it's standard workshop practise, at least it is in a decent honest workshop.

Was this a SEAT dealer, or independent workshop? No work should be carried out without expressed authorisation from the customer. If you didn’t authorise work, either your old parts should be refitted or the workshop should not be charging you.

Thanks for all the feedback folks.

Yes, it was a Seat dealer in the Republic of Ireland.

Lesson learned, it might be time to avoid the main dealerships and go to a good and decent mechanic running his own garage.
