....has just been received. Gone up a fiver from last year. Was £43.31 - now £48.31.

Still very reasonable if you take two cars plus you and the Mrs. into account.

There's always someone to answer the phone in the office (in Romford) as well as on the breakdown line and the terms and conditions aren't especially onerous and although it's many years since I used them I've no reason to think they wouldn't sort me out if the need arose.

I'll renew straight away.

And, yes, those who don't have breakdown cover may well have a point regarding all the premiums they've saved over the years - but most (although not all) still pay their buildings and contents cover despite their house having not caught fire.

Do they cover North East Scotland?!

The terms and conditions don't mention North East Scotland but if it's a cause for concern then why not ring them? 0345 241 1359

I’ve just renewed with AutoAid as well. I shopped around a bit and found a few cheaper prices, but did find that AutoAid offers more for a very reasonable amount, and the cheaper deals were more restrictive and from companies I had never heard of!

Hopefully I won’t need them, but it’s worth a quid a week to cover both cars (my wife’s Yaris is cob ered under a service plan). Last time I had to call out a recovery truck was over 20 years ago when my Panda 750 wouldn’t start (it often wouldn’t start!).

Just cancelled my Nationwide Flex plus account as the travel insurance foe over 70s got too expensive .
Looked at Auto Aid but they don't get as good a response time as Gem , the AA or Brittania Rescue.
But Gem gets the best reviews but they are much more expensive.

Thinking of cancelling Brittania as long as Auto Aid cover Home Start ?

"Thinking of cancelling Brittania as long as Auto Aid cover Home Start ?"

Everything's in the terms and conditions on their website.

It tells you what's covered, what's not covered and how much they charge.

I've been with them since 1984

I've been with then 3 years I used them once when the alternator went on the car not a mile from home. They came in 20 minutes and got me to a garage of my choice all without any fuss I would highly recommend them.

The certainly cover Perth BBD, we've been with them for about 5 or 6 years now and used them a fair bit when we had the Mondeo (crankshaft sensor) and a couple of issues on the old MK1 TT. They've always been fine.

Looks like Home Start is not covered by Auto Aid. Only a £65 contribution towards the cost.
HJ recommends Gem followed by Brittania then Auto Aid.
But the cost is also in that order.

No, you're wrong.

That used to be the case - it isn't now.

GF gets some limited cover via her credit card. This is in Taiwan though. I dunno if any cards available in the UK provide similar cover.

She sold her car, and apparently can transfer the cover to mine. This is handy, since its currently stranded about 20k from home, which is just on the limit

If I cant fix it (vacuum leak prime suspect, but also had a leak from the see-through aftermarket fuel filter, which I've replaced with a new OEM one) I may shortly experience my very first civilian vehicle recovery.

Thanks KB for clearing that up.
See that Auto Aid are offering 15 months for the price of 12 for new joiners.

But what is the position regarding accepting dogs in the recovery truck?
I was refused by Brittania and had to wait at East Midlands Airport for my daughter came for me whilst my partners car was recovered.
All to do with the risk of anaphalectic shock affecting the recovery driver or future recovery passengers. When I last checked only Start would consider taking dogs in the cab..

That's why I declined to renew and they wouldn't offer me the same terms as new joiners. I'll look again when my current arrangement ends.

There's a big difference in the cost of paying for a recovery as a distress purchase (a few hundred quid perhaps) and the cost of rebuilding a home (£100k +++). The first is fairly trivial, the latter ruinous.

^^^ True.

But in the (admittedly reasonaly unlikely) event that my Mrs. happened to get stuck somewhere and I wasn't about to help then I don't want her to worry about finding someone to sort her out on a Sunday evening when it's dark and raining. I just want one number for her to to ring.

And £48 is the cost of a modest meal for two in a local pubt .... I can manage that. It covers two cars and both of us ... that £12 each per car per person.
