Vauxhall Astra J - Steering feels light - Jack Davies
Hi guys,

I wonder if you can help.

I have a 2010 Vauxhall Astra J which I am having an issue with.

And certain points throughout my journey, my steering feels very light almost towards the point that I feel like I am driving on ice. Admittedly the car has not misbehaved in terms of spinning or sliding however I do not feel comfortable driving the car when the steering is so light.

Last week I had two brand new front tyres put on and the wheels aligned as I felt this may be causing the issue. However this has not fixed the problem and the steering feels just as light.

Any ideas what this could be and what sort of price I am looking at to get it repaired?

Thanks guys

The obvious question is - have you checked/adjusted the tyre pressures or just assumed to tyre fitter knows?

Is it raining when this occurs and what make of tyres have you fitted and how much trad were on the origionals.

Running in new tyres takes 200 miles or so, this completes the vulcanisation process to give the maximum road adhesion, afaik ,and also removes the slippery mould release compound.

Importantly, you should adjust your tyre pressures to those recommended. Don't necessarily trust the tyre fitter.

Thanks guys, in my naivety I did not check the tyre pressure after installed, I will check this.

I’ve also noted that the car is pulling to the right slightly, however it was aligned at the garage. I may take it back into them and ask them to re-do the alignment

I've taken cars back after suffering the same (mis)alignment problems.

Checked tonight and my front tyres should be 32PSI however one was 33PSI and one was 35PSI.

To me this only seems to be marginal in terms of over inflation, could this cause the light steering sensation and the car pulling to one side?

Thanks guys.

Try it out at the correct pressures and let us know after doing a few miles to bed the tyres in. Yes , that could have been the issue.

New tyres need a brakein period. Mine felt weird even after 600mile.
If you dont get a fix with the tyre pessure, you should swich up wheel back to front and check if there mounte corectly as they could be directional (one way direction of travel).

If you dont get a fix check shock absorbers as the might have bursted wich in some cases happen out of nowhere not just by hiting a pot hole.

Just a thought here, those times you found the steering going light, was it afternoon/early evening after several days worth of salting without rain?

I ask because when the salt has sat on the road for a few days, it attracts the damp as the day draws in and the surface can become as slippery as the ice it's there to help keep at bay.

A few weeks before Christmas i had just swapped over to the winter wheels and tyres on SWMBO Forester, a car that usually never puts a foot wrong, one afternoon i popped out in it and at the mini roundabout up the road the steering went decidedly light and the car felt like it would run wide, that immediately put me in mind to change the tyres, but i decided to see how they fared..sure enough once it rained and washed the roads clean again normal proverbial grip returned.
