I have a T registration Toyota Corolla 19 years old, automatic with just over 103,000 miles on the clock. I'm told that with older cars, even reliable cars like mine, which is in excellent condition, that a regular service is not that important and to just fix things, as and when they need doing. Some say different and that a regular service is essential. Is there anyone who could advise on this, particularly if you own my age Corolla.?

Thank's for any assistance.

Geoff.

Depends on how you value the car. If its neglected it will be likely to die earlier but with a little care the car should live on.

Which is cheaper, maintenance or a replacement car?

If you want to keep it running well, and if its good nick no reason it can't see many more years, then it makes sense to do some regular maintenance.

Engine oil and filter every year (easy DIY, no need for Gucci oil, cheap as chips do this annually), check air and cabin filters, if it hasn't been done for a long time change the gearbox oil (should have its own dipstick, oil should be clean and red), if anything like other Japanese autos i've done this is actually easier than an engine oil change, again no need for Gucci oils, just normal Dexron whatever spec is required.

Most important on Japanese cars is to service the brakes decently, probably every other year, pads out rear drums off, clean inspect and lubricate the pistons and sliders of the calipers with the correct brake grease , not coppaslip, make sure the slave cyl pistons are not leaking and free moving in their bores and that the automatic adjuster is working properly then a sparing lube of the rear brake mechanism, lube the handbrake cable, grease all exposed brake pipes...consider a brake fluid change if it been in there forever or looks dirty, moisture gets in the fluid over time.

Check auxilliary drive belt(s), and check whether the cambelt (if it has one) is due, is it due spark plugs?

Other than that, a good all round inspection of the suspension and underbody, exhaust lights etc, and you're good for years.

Delightful cars to work on Toyotas and that model Corolla is one the best cars ever made, designed with decent maintenance in mind, easy enough DIY, or any decent indy will relish this job.
