The New Scientist reports that a Chinese university is working on replacing carbon black in tyres with silica. The new composition enhances the static electricity generated by the tyres in motion and can be collected and used to charge the battery. I think it will be more useful in electric cars.

It will lead to white tyres. Maybe blackwalls will be 'in'. and tyre polisging products to keep the tread pristine white....

Or colour coded tyres to the car; "Hi, I have a puncture, do you have a 205/45/16W in green?"
