Can I drop 1275 automatic engine and box into my 850 automatic has a straight swap or do I need to change anything else. They are both a series mini engines

Not too sure they made a 1300 auto Mini. I would guess this power unit has come out of an Austin/Morris 1300 model. No doubt it would fit in the engine bay ,but what about the brakes.? You may find the drive shafts are different as the AM 1300 had front disc brake system.

You could get a late 1275 Mini auto

The 1275 is from a late mini 1985 reg i believe. was told it had drum brakes but not sure.will the wireing be same , I've got a new carb and manifold for it. Would I need to change to disk brakes

The 1275 motor has nearly double the horsepower and 50% more torque than the 850 so I would think a swap to disc front brakes would be a good idea. As said above you may need different driveshafts.

The wiring to get the engine to run should be fairly simple (assuming the 850 engine runs an alternator and not a older-style dynamo) but the rest of the wiring will probably be suck-it-and-see,

You may be best served on a specialist Mini forum, as I'm sure this swap has been done many times before.

Try the "miniforum"

there's some guys who have fitted a maxi engine in!

they'll know all the ins and outs of what's needed.

Mate of mine actually fitted a Astra 16 valve motor but was not happy with the looks. Then he considered a S2000 Honda but very tall.

Finally fitted a BMW K1200 head onto the A series block and that gives ample power.

Does hill climbs does he? I've seen that installation, four valves per cylinder and four carbs. It blew my mind about lining up combustion chamber centres, fixing bolts, waterways and oil feed for the OHC. Oh, and converting the chain driven cam to a belt driven OHC.

Only just seen this thread.

850 Automatics are quite rare now so from a classic car perspective better to keep it as it is and maybe sell it and buy a 1992 on Mini auto which were all 1275's (carb at first and later injection). All the early autos from 1966 had uprated engines: 850 39bhp up from 34bhp, 998 44bhp up from 38bhp and 1098 56bhp up from 48bhp. The 1300 autos were 60bhp like the manual cars. The 850 auto box isn't rated to take the torque from 1098 or 1275 engine and would probably suffer from slipping 4th gear/reverse gear clutch. Also there were idler gear bearing problems with early gearboxes being too small and having poor lubrication. Easiest conversion would be to used engine/gearbox from an auto Metro (63bhp) and fit 8.4inch disk brakes !

If the sub frame mountings are the same for both vehciles, could you swap the engine and sub frame assembly as one from the 1275 to the shell of the 850.

I would also concur with the previous post regarding the originality of the 850 auto as they are now extremely rare.

One final thought, is it definitely the 848 cc engine not the 998 unit as I seem to recall the auto was an option only on the 998 unit, I could be wrong though
