No bad thing, with luck they will introduce an annual road worthiness check too.

New trailer registration law - RT

It's part of the government's arrangements to exit the EU - it won't be mandatory and won't apply to non-commercial trailers.

"

We do not intend to require registration of any trailers that are used solely within the

UK. Mandatory registration will apply solely for international travel to, or through,

countries whic

h have ratified the 1968 Convention. Mandatory registration will

primarily apply to commercial trailers weighing over 750kg. Our intention is also to

apply mandatory registration to larger non

-

commercial trailers weighing over 3,500kg

undertaking such jour

neys, though this is an issue on which we are seeking industry

views. This higher weight threshold for non

-

commercial trailers will exclude almost all

leisure user caravans and horse trailers. This legislation will not introduce an annual

tax for trailers

Only applies if you intend to use it in certain countries - there's a lot of detail:

Trailers over 500 kg maximum loaded weight in France have to be registered and insured separately, so you get a registration card and number plates for it, and compulsory annual insurance usually costs about €25. And it has to be from an approved manufacturer, and plated etc. So you get the unusual situation of the trailer having different number plates to the towing vehicle - Strange!

Below 500 KG no reg or insurance required, any old home-made contraption will do.

But no MOT inspections - yet.

It also means that if your (UK registered) towcar breaks down in France, there is no legal way (that I'm aware of) to hire a (French Registered) towcar to tow your caravan around and complete your holiday.

Visitors are an exception - in any case, with decent foreign breakdown cover, a UK-registered hire car, with a towbar, would be taken out.

There is also no way that a hire car would have a towbar fitted. Your best bet would be to hire a van from any of the french supermarkets, they all offer vehicle hire at 50% lower rates than the usual suspects, LeClerc, Intermarche and SuperU are the big three. Some transit sized vans have towbars

There's every way - it really isn't difficult to find them - even in the UK they need to be hired by those towing and involved in a non-fault accident - often something big like a Discovery.

Holland introduced similar rules 10+ years ago.

UK legislation is framed in terms that exclude non-commercial trailers under 3500kg. Even the biggest touring caravans are well below that. Has there been any intention to apply rules to caravans then I'm sure the clubs would have been all over it.
