My main reason of going for bmw is i am a software developer and the bmw platform is very coder friendly so i plan on tinkering with that side of things, i am a nerd :)
Are you saying that you want (and more to the point, allowed) to connect a computer and tinker with the iDrive system? That will just cause all sorts of headaches when it comes to servicing, repairs and insurance.
What exactly do you want to do? I work in IT myself and can handle techno-babble.
Hey essentially you can plug a laptop up to the cars OBD Port, open a program called ESYS and enable lots of features that haven't been activated from the dealer (such as apple car play) saves you paying the dealer to do it when you can do it yourself.
This is only a few select things i can remember but all of these cant be set without tapping into the OBD
You can enable automatic change the angle of the passenger mirror when you go into reverse. You can set the actual angle.
Set the car so it always starts with ac on or off.
Turn on digital speedo.
Set it so the radio mutes when the drivers door opens.
Set the lights under the door handles to turn on when in reverse to help see curbs.
Silly things like enabling the Rolls Royce sounds as its built into the head unit just needs activating.
You can enable things in idrive such as video on motion / add support for .mkv / .mp4 and storing more files on the idrives hard drive.
Warranty cant be a bit hit and miss, so to be safe the community around this suggest reverting to a backup before taking the car in for a service so it removes all the enabled features. Or you can turn them off one by one.
