Corsa eco 2003 - How long should a new exhaust last? - Sharon Anderson

Hi, I had my exhaust replaced in 2016 as it was blowing/noisy. After a few months it started rattling, I took it back and the garage said a bracket had come loose so he fixed it, been fine then up until this week when its started blowing again. It sounds like its got a hole in it. The garage is a one man with an apprentice looking lad. Im sure it should last longer than it has, and as Im a female/clearly not a car expert Im worried Ill be stitched up a bit. It cost quite a lot to get changed and I expected it to last a long time!!

If your car is a diesel the exhaust should last several years, as its inside gets coated in soot which prevents corrosion. But I suspect it has a petrol engine, in which case its life will depend on whether you often do short trips. The exhaust never warms through fully and condensation can rust through from inside in a year or two, especially on a replacement exhaust which is typically 'cheaper' than the original.

Brackets coming loose are a different thing, and may be fixable (for a while) with a welding torch.

Original exhausts last very well, 8+ years in my experience - if the OPs lasted 13 years that's good.

Aftermarket exhausts which are cheaper than OE exhausts may be made by the same company but have corners cut on construction and materials.

Even if you buy replacement exhausts from the main dealer they still never last like the original.

You car is now a shade too old to bother, but for future reference if you shop about you can get a custom made stainless system made up and fitted for approx £300, and it comes with a lifetime warranty.

The previous Subaru exhaust was impossible to find aftermarket and main dealer price would have been some £1000, we got a full system made and fitted on site at MIJ exhausts Walsall for £299 all in, and with a lifetime warranty...for future reference ask for a quiet system (unless you want noise) and be prepared to be on site for a long time, possibly 6 or more if they are busy, so the town/cinema/whatever is the order of the day....otherwise a very well made exhaust and i will use them again, other stainless specialists quoted twice that price though no doubt there are other companies dotted about as good, unfortunately Northants and surrounds doesn't have the best selection of such car services.

Was it a full exhaust or just a section that was replaced? If it was then it’s not been properly fitted as we see from the earlier problem and may have been moving around which caused damage and early failure. But you’ve no comeback after 2yrs though so you’ll just have to grin and bear it. I tend to use only tyre and exhaust centres for this as they do it constantly and tend to be a bit more experienced. Avoid Kwick Fit though.

I suspect they occasionally last the life of the car these days. Our 2000 petrol Focus 132,000miles, is original, although I paid a tenner to have a bracket welded back on 2 yrs ago. The Rimmer stainless steel exhaust I had fitted to my 1980 TR7 in 1992 (got fed up of replacing three year guarantee tailboxes every three years and two days) is still intact.

Non genuine exhaust systems never fit properly. In fact it's always a lottery as to how good or bad they'll be. I would always fit a genuine system.
