BMW 5 Series Touring 2009 - SatNav & Phone Options - Fatcamel

Hi... I'm new the forum (although my Dad has been using for years, and loves it!), and I'm after some advice / tips for options for sat nav and blue tooth (or just blue tooth) for a car I have just bought - a 2009 BMW 520d, which doesn't have these at the moment. I'm really not very tech-savvy!

The car doesn't have satnav or blue tooth (although does have the buttons). It does have an aux input and a cigar lighter and BMW single cd player. What I want to do is to be able to either Bluetooth connect, or even plug in my phone to the car to enable me to make phone calls. It would also be good to be able to access sat nav and my music library etc. Does nay one know my options and ideas of costs for these things? I think I can get BMW parts to add these, but have a feeling it would work out really expensive for a £6k car? I have seen there are screen / stereo type options I can buy from Halfords etc, that seem to do these sort of things I'm after, but where would they go in the car? Would I still be able to use the BMW control buttons (either on the steering wheel or the controls next to the handbrake?) and would I still be able to see the servicing info etc that is currently displayed on the screen?

Sorry if these questions seem to be silly... any advice / solutions / options /tips (other than 'sell the car') will be gratefully received!

Many thanks for your help. Fatcamel.

Simple answer is this will not be easy. As you yourself say "where would they go"?

When i bought a stand alone Sat Nav about 10 years ago there were some available that had a bluetooth function, they may still be available form TomTom, Garmin etc. I appreciate they are not as pretty as a built in one but they cost £100's at best, a built in one would cost way more.

We have since had one new car with built in Satnav (free model upspec by the delear) and when delivered the maps were 2 years out of date (probably older in truth - that was the date of the saftware version). Ti get updates was stupidly expensive, think it was just over £100 and the dealer said the maps would still be out of date. The bits you acquired out of a 10 year old BMW would be similarly out of date and the bluetooth bits might not even work with a modern phone.

Both our car use Android Auto and with that we can use the Maps App on the phone. We actually use Waze now because it does traffic, roadworks and speed cameras all for free (and the maps are regularly updated free as well). No idea if you could get a suitable head unit for your car but might we worth asking on the BMW Forum.

Will never have a built in unit again (unless its standard of course).

What is your budget?

For £60-£100 you can get brand new Garmin/TT Satnav with Blutooth +free map updates (until they discontinue for that model). Solves a problem but leaves others unanswered.

Loads of money

I am sure somewhere there is a scrappy will have built in kit from 2009 & another scrappy somewhere has the housing to fit a 520 from 2009 & then you need an car electrician who knows his way around a 10 yr old BMW at a time when car electrics become problematic.

To fit factory nav and Bluetooth to this car,you will be looking at around £1500 + . So not really an economic option. As above, go with Garmin or Tom Tom.
