Octavia / Superb - 1.4TSi / 2.0TDi - Wee Willie Winkie

18 month to 2 year old example.

I'm moving from a Sportage 1.6GDi with 130bhp and 118 lb/ft torque. The 1.4 in the Octavia and Superb has 148bhp and 140 lb/ft torque. Will there be a discernable difference between the two? The Sportage is painfully leisurely, especially when loaded or faced with an incline.

Maybe the 2.0TDi is the way to go - especially if I can stretch to a VRS... My mileage is around 10k but with good motorway runs, so a DPF shouldn't be an issue.

The 1.4TSi in the facelifted Octavias has 180+lb-ft of torque from quite low down in the rev range so it's quite a muscular engine.

Many posters here have cars with the 1.4 motor and report it goes very well and is economical. Obviously the 2 litre diesel will have more shove low down (250+lb-ft) but apparently the 1.4 isn't left wanting either.

I suppose the answer is to test-drive both engines and see which you prefer.

Octavia / Superb - 1.4TSi / 2.0TDi - Wee Willie Winkie

Quite right - it is 180 lb/ft of torque, not 140 as I thought. I'm guessing that would make quite a difference.

Pedantically, the torque figure is 184 lb/ft, which is around the value of a 1.5/1.6 diesel engine.

It certainly pulls our Q3 along very nicely, and I suspect the Octavia is a little lighter.

As said, there isn't the grunt present of a 2.0 TDi, but it pulls strongly from 1500 RPM, something which the 1.6 GDi in your Sportage probably doesn't. Give the petrol a try first.

Octavia / Superb - 1.4TSi / 2.0TDi - Avant

If you can stretch to a vRS, go for a petrol one - they go even better, and will still give 40 mpg on a long run. Absolutely great to drive - essentially a roomier, cheaper to buy and insure, Golf GTI.

If not, the 1.4 petrol will do fine. Two regulars on here have that engine in Superbs, and don't find them wanting in performance.

When the time comes to sell it, you may well find that a petrol will be worth more than the equivalent diesel. I'd still say that diesel makes sens in big cars which do a high annual mileage, but (partly becaue of the excellent economy from engines like the VAG 1.4 TSI) diesel is going out of favour big-time for medium and small cars.

The Sportage is painfully leisurely, especially when loaded or faced with an incline.

I suspect that driveability is the problem rather than absolute performance which looks more than adequate. Turbo diesels spoiled naturally aspirated engines for many people (and also got many into the habit of accelerating like a scalded cat despite using moderate rpms, something that a NA petrol doesn't do unless it's a big one.

Unless you are prepared to use the gears and the upper rev range, best stick with a turbo - petrol or diesel.

Personally I like the character and driving experience of a free revving unboosted petrol engine such as the one in my MX-5. But my everyday car is a diesel Outlander with more than 3 times the torque at less than half the revs.

I'm happy with my previous gen 1.4tsi (125ps) Skoda Superb II and the newer versions have much more power/torque.

I'm on holiday in the middle of France at the moment (with a car full of luggage, wine and confit de canard ) and am not finding it lacking. The only time you need to drop out of the rather tall 6th gear (2000rpm = 60mph) is on very steep inclines. Infact it tugs the bus along really well at 130kph speeds with plenty of pull available. Economy slightly hit with all this speed, weight and hilly stuff (in Dordogneshire at the mo) but it's only dropped from about 46 mpg to about 42mpg - can't complain considering the size of the car and the fact it drinks from the green nozzle.

The 1.4 tsi is very driveable as the pull starts lowish in the engine rev range (from 1500rpm) and bulds all the way up to 6000+ rpm. At motorway speeds the engine will be spinning at over 2300rpm so feels pretty responsive.

As previously mentioned - take one for a test drive

We are on our 2nd car with the 1.4 TSi. The first was a Seat Leon 140 PS and now we have a Skoda Superb with the 150 PS. Both have been absolutely magic. We are in Scotland at present, the car has averaged a genuine 54.5 mpg so far, in May on the same trip it managed just over 55 mpg thus those figures are not a fluke. The Leon, although smaller and lighter was not as good, can only put the difference down to the cylinder deactivation that the newer versions have.

We have had turbo diesels in the past, between 1996 and 2015 we had 5. None gave much better mpg than the 1.4 TSi, most were not as good, The most powerful was a 143 PS BMW. The Skoda TSi has better driving manners than any of them, power from 1500 rpm to the 6000 rpm red line (but in truth you will never go there - simply no need).

Its all the engine you require in the real world.

Try one and be amazed.

Thanks to everyone.

Today was a day of test drives. First of all was the 2.0TDi - I was very impressed. All the power I think I could ever need; effortless acceleration even in 5th/6th and a lot of low down grunt, I was in a 2017 VRS so 184bhp and an awful lot of torque.

Next was the 1.4TSi. I was impressed. Like you say, Skidpan, it had great driving manners and I liked the delivery. But.....

.... I preferred the dirty, particle spewing oil burner. Not just for the engine but also for the whole package.

Negotiations on the cost to change continue.....

I have the 184bhp VRS engine in my Octavia Scout - as a 'health warning 'I would say I've found the power/torque addictive! I have no reasonable need for that amount of power, but I'm finding myself reluctant to consider anything with less power in the future!

Octavia / Superb - 1.4TSi / 2.0TDi - Big John

If diesel is the way to go here , negotiate hard as some great diesel deals can be had.

Sounds like you'll be OK re DPF anyway and later designed cars don't seem to have the issues that earlier DPF "bolt on" implementations had.

Octavia / Superb - 1.4TSi / 2.0TDi - Nomag

Also have the 184 TDI in my Leon FR.

Like you I tried the petrol also, but just preferred the diesel, it gave better economy in my hands. (I've covered 10.5k miles since Feb, averaging 48mpg actual, I like to press on). Buying new, I would have taken the petrol (significantly cheaper) but found thanks to "dieselgate" used diesels were actually quite a bit cheaper than the 1.4 TSI.

Crossing fingers, I've yet to have DPF issues on any of my vehicles, and we've been running DPF equipped diesels since 2009. Run them to c. 80k, so probably somebody else gets the problems....I do 15-16k per year.

Deal done on a 2.0TDi CR vRS 5 door in Quartz metallic. Lovely looking car and surprisingly more practical.

Octavia / Superb - 1.4TSi / 2.0TDi - Avant

Good luck with it. Assuming that it's under 2 years old, it'll be Euro 6 compliant so you won't be one of the 'particle-spewing' offenders.

Octavia / Superb - 1.4TSi / 2.0TDi - Wee Willie Winkie

Haha! Yes, it's one year old.

I’ve had a 66-plate 2.0 litre Diesel Superb for the last two years. It’s been a great car. Smooth and trouble-free on the motorway. The boot (saloon) is absolutely enormous and I love the fact it has loads of leg room in the front and back.
