Can anyone reccomend or relate their experiences with Temporary car Insurance and the typical cost for a mature driver with a low risk car ( no accidents, convictions etc)

Are there any car dealers that can offer some guidance ?

The scenario is buying a low cost replacement car, a test drive of several; miles before deciding to make the purchase, pre purchase checks reveal it is Uninsured

Current personal car insurance offers third party cover to drive any other vehicle provided it is currently insured by anothet owner, so if the askMID database says Un insured is there a commonly used soloution to prevent any offences being committed eg ( drive no insurance)

thank you

Its illegal to drive with no insurance. If the current owner allows you to drive knowing its uninsurred they are comitting an offence and you will also be comitting an offence. Points and fine for both.

Getting insurance on a car you don't own is difficult (if not impossible) and expensive, insurance for short periods is very expensive.

Only solution I can think of is to take a friendly local mechanic with you who has trade plates and pay him to do an inspection and test drive. With luck you may be able to drive as well.

If a car you are interested in is uninsured, and a private sale so no trade insurance and plates to drive under, i wouldn't be wasting my time going to look at it unless it was a known car or something bought at scrap value for parts, if it proves better than scrap once purchased all well and good.

This is something people who sell their cars privately need to sort out, suitable cover and VED that is so test drives are legal, and it's what we have done in the past, it is not the job of a potential private buyer to have this responsibility.

You'll find temporary insurance rates rather expensive, by the time you've done this a couple of times (let alone as said trying to insure a car you don't own for test drive purposes) you'll find any private sale savings will be quickly eaten up.

The trade plate equipped person is a good idea, but he won't come cheap, i'd want £200 for the day if asessing the car plus expenses and no doubt he will too, obviously payable whether the car is bought or not.

I think it best if OP fills in an application for an actual car on autotrader similar for what he is looking for to get a price. It could vary a lot depending on where he lives.

I used to do this quite often. My mother no longer drove her old Fiesta and when I visited UK I would get a week’s insurance. On at least one occasion it was Royal, a major company, and was accepted to tax the car at the PO. It was expensive if viewed on an annual basis but good value for a week; cheaper than car hire and without all the hassle that can bring. Because of admin charges one day’s insurance would be expensive compared to a week’s. I must say that when I last looked prices had gone up considerably though.

I am not disagreeing with skidpan that “getting insurance on a car you don't own is difficult (if not impossible)” in general but maybe these short term contracts expect this sort of situation. I had no problem.

I am sure that I have test driven cars on trade plates and that there will not be a problem; but there the seller owned or at least had for sale the car in question. Use of trade plates seems incredibly strictly controlled; not even allowed to drop your children off at school on way to work.

Try confused. Short term insurance is geared towards exactly this situation and is one of the selectable options on the form.

Just use something like this:

www.dayinsure.com/

Last time I used them it was something like £12 a day or £15 for the weekend.

Don't forget to tax it after you insure it. There is a section on the V5C that gives a longer ref number that allows this to be done online.

If you do not buy simply surrender the tax, will cost you a month.

I tend to think of used toilet paper and all car insurance policy documents of being of approx the same value. Car insurance is an industry at least in the UK that is engineered for profit basis with not anywhere close to the level of regulation that is really needed.

It is certainly a predicament.
I shortly intend to sell my Alfa GTV 3.0.
I’m not sure I will allow anyone to drive it insured or not.
220 bhp is not so much these days but I don’t intend getting wrapped around a tree by someone else’s doing.
I guess I may lose potential buyers but not worth the risk to me.
Though we I bought it (private sale) I showed the chap my insurance certificate that allowed me 3rd party only cover he just gave me the keys and said take it as far as you want!
