MG TF - POWER STEERING - strickjumpers

Hello, can anyone tell me if anything can be disconnected from power steering rack of mgtf to restore to manual, the steering is reported to be very heavy and Iwish to recover the car on emergency basis by driving. if pump was semi frozen could it be removed, if hydraulic check valves the problem, could lines be safely disconnected to allow straight through , thanks, oh, does anyone know of a common fault, fuse, relay, pumpetc and degree of difficulty to repair on driveway, many thanks. Mike.

The pas system on these is not hydraulic. It has an electric powered steering column coupled to a standard rack and pinion system. If the pas is heavy, then it could be that the electric part is not working.

thank you very much for the information, so can i disconnect or remove the motor to revert to manual operation? mike.

No need to do anything. If the electrics fail it's "steering to manual". The column is directly connected to the rack.

thanks, the steering is reported as extremely stiff, could the rack be bent or some other issue? i would have imagined if the electric system failed it would be a bit easier? mike.

Have you checked the fuse? On the MGF there was a large fuse under the bonnet on the near side.

Why would you think that without assistance the steering would be easier? Assistance (hydraulic, electric or a bit of both) is fitted to make the steering easier.

hi, no not checked anything. im 500 miles from the car and just looking to by it, i can soon sort it out when i get it home but just want a bit of a heads up to get it safe to drive. thanks again, any idea of fuse rating or is it in a special adaptor or relay style box? cheers, mike.

hi, when i mean easier, easier without power in the event of a failure while driving should surely be able to control the car, the report is the steering is very stiff, just wondered it f there is a different ault. mike.

just thought it should be easier than reported if power fails thats all. mike

I sometimes push my car out of the garage without starting it or turnoing ignition on - unassisted, the steering is too heavy to safely drive it, as is the case with most modern cars.

If you drove it with unassisted steering:

a) unless you have the upper body strength of a gorilla or orang-utang you wouldn't be able to turn corners or safely change lanes and

b) would leave yourself open to charges of driving an unroadworthy vehicle.

Your decision.

Fuse is 40 amp, fairly standard auto fuse. Google it and you will find a picture on Rimmer Bros website.

If I remember correctly, if the engine is run for a while without the car moving it can throw a fault on the power steering. This caused mine to fail MOT once, but reset itself once the car was restarted which was an easy fix, so if there is a warning light showing, that may be reason.

Thank you all very much for the information so far.

I was looking at second hand steering motors on Ebay and noticed some were being sold with the ECU. is there a feedback that would show up on OBD2 reader or ate these items just sold as an unrelated batch?

Once again, many thanks, Mike.

SImple OBD2 readers only read engine codes. To read more, you need software etc

Does a TF have an OBD2 port?
