Hi everyone.

I have a Hyundai i20 (2015), I really love it. I bought it used from Saltmarine in Northern Ireland last year, it only had 17000 miles on it and was immaculate. I look after it really well, after having a runabout for years.

The other day I very, very stupidly drove too close to the pillar at the end of the driveway (trying to avoid the bins, I should have just got out and moved them...sigh), and it left a fine scratch across the left rear passenger door about 10cms above the handle and extended very slightly over to the next panel.

Weeks ago I also turned into a side bollard trying to get out of a parking space (I know, I know, genuinely didn't see it - it was very short and I noticed the other bollard opposite had been knocked over!! So I wasn't the only one). This caused my front bumper to pop out slightly, THANK GOD I was able to pop it back in, there was a tiny bit of paint chipped off (like less than my little finger nail). Very lucky hardly any damage, could hardly see it. I also realised this had cracked the front left mudguard, but with no adverse affect on the tires.

On 4th July I took my car for it's third year service at Daly's in Belfast (because they were cheaper than Saltmarine). I was very happy with the after sales team, they were very informative about the cost of the service, what all had been done etc etc. No qualms there.

So I also mentioned about the scratch and the slight damage to the bumper and could they maybe take a little look at it while the car was in. I came back to pick my car up, paid for the service and they said one of the technicians would talk to me about my car.

I am honestly not joking when I say he quoted me £770 for the repair work!!!!!! He said I would need two full panel resprays plus a whole new bumper, as apparently a piece had fallen out that held it together (strange, because I've been driving around with the bumper in place and it's been grand, I checked the ground after the bump and didn't see anything on the ground, and the other side of the bumper doesn't have this "piece" where it joins the wheel panel).

I then asked him how much it would cost just to get the scratch seen to, since there's no way I could afford that (and also, I can't ask my dad or he will lose the plot even though it's not his car). He stood for a good minute making up a price off the top of his head and came back with £440. I also asked him about the mudguard which he said would be £60.

I had already phoned Saltmarine's parts team the day before and got a quote for £28 + VAT, for TWO mudguards.

So I'm on here asking for your advice about roughly how much I could expect to pay for these repairs. I can post photos if possible. I just can't afford it right now but obviously I will set money aside. Saltmarine had said if it was a small scratch I could fill it in with a paint pen.

My friends have said that the technician at Daly's was just taking the mick because I was a young woman by myself....I hate to think that is the case.

There is a guy nearby, 'Colortec' who can come out to the house and do paint touch ups etc. Any thoughts? Should I maybe get a quote from him? Daly's made out as if it was extensive damage and I had driven in to the side of a skip.

I'm a little clueless as to how much these things should cost (suppose I should stop driving into things).

Thanks so much in advance.

Sophie

Whilst it does depend on exactly how deep the scratches are, if they are quite fine ones then I'd expect a decent bodyshop would be able to polish them out or even touch them in - which could feasibly cost anywhere from £50 to £200 or so, I'd guess.

So that's the next job. Find a good independent bodyshop. Recommendations from friends, etc.

As to the bumper, if it's holding on perfectly fine then ignore it. As to the bit of paint demage on it, a touch-up pen might well do a perfectly good job.

If the mobile chap is recommended by people you trust or used by much of the local car sales trade, then get him round for a quote.

Also ask around friends, or any handy car enthusiast types you know who actually get their own hands dirty, it's most likely there is a one man and his dog bodyshop lurking somewhere within 20 miles, these sorts of jobs are right up their street and chances are they'll be able to resecure the bumper properly too, for sensible money.

Hi, There are plenty of firms out there - mobile - who will come and do a decent job for peanuts. I've used them in the past on my old toyota which seemed to be a target in a car park...always a new scratch when I came back to it.

My wife caught our gate with the front bumper on our previous kia which I managed to polish out the scratches with colormagic from halfords (works wonders). but the bracket had come adrift from the bumper where it slots in by the front wing. An application of Araldite soon fixed it!! all this costs very little but i would suggest using a colour match polish first - you might be surprised.

Hope this helps

Thanks so much for all your replies everyone. I am currently away visiting my sister but will def call the mobile paintwork technician when I get back. I had wondered myself about colour magic - do you think it will work on polar white? I’ve used T cut before when I had a red Berlingo and it was brilliant. Good to hear about the Araldite too. I can at least try it first and if it still needs attention I’m happy to pay for it then. Thanks again, Sophie

T-cut is for removing discoloured paint. Sounds as if you need to add paint, so T-cut won't solve the problem unless the damage is very superficial. Colourmatch polish or some attention from a mobile specialist is probably the way to go.

Yes, you are correct! Now I know :-) My dad took the car to get the scratches touched up in Tyrone as it was cheaper than in Belfast area. It was £120 for all the scratches plus the mudguards! Happy days.

And Daly's Hyundai Belfast advertise on the radio as being the number one Hyundai dealership in Europe. Certainly not then. Try Rankin Cook car bodyshop in Lisburn. Excellent reputation and very affordable prices.

I've found Saltmarine to be much more approachable. I would be confident going in by myself to the showroom to look at cars; I wouldn't do that at Daly's. Michael Salt sold me my i20 and was extremely helpful and truthful about the cars I looked at, at no point was he pushy. I'm keeping Rankin Cook bookmarked, as it's very close to me, incase of future bumps! Many thanks for the recommendation.
