I recently purchased a new to me 2015 Nissan qashqai 1.6 dci. Imprrssd with the car so far. Yesterday I opend the bonnet to do the usuel checks and saw how tiny the engin actuly is (lots of ancillary parts fill the engin bay) infact the battery actuly looks bigger than the engin.

Are they doing this by making cylinder walls thinner?

Just how much smaller do you think an engine could be made by making the cylinder walls thinner?. A 1.6 is not actually a big engine in the grand scheme of things. I used to have a 1.6 Capri, it's engine looked tiny in an engine bay big enough for a 2.8 or 3.0 V6!. I seem to remember reading that the engine block of Fords 1.0 (ecoboost) can sit comfortably within the confines of a sheet of A4 paper. And that can produce up to 140bhp, though perhaps without a great deal of reliability!.

The 1.6 petrol in my suzuki sx4 looks bigger than the 1.6 dci that's why I was asking how they have made it look so small I know a 1.6 isn't a large engin it's 1200 cc smaller than the engin in my last car and that was a bug old lump.

To some extent it depends on the way the engine range was designed.

All Ford x-flow engines shared the same cylinder spacing thus the 1.1 and the 1.6 had exactly the same footprint under the bonnet. However, the 1.6 was a tad taller. Still difficult to tell just by looking under the bonnet which engine it was.

Same with the original range of Zetec engines, 1.6 through 2 litres the blocks looked identical except for the engine size being cast into the metal. As with the x-flow a glance under the bonnet would tell you little. Eventually the 1.6 was replaced by the Zetec SE (the Yamaha derived engine still being used by Ford), the Zetec 1.6 was a huge hevy lump.

But the Rover k series was different. It was designed as a 1400 and was pretty compact. It was also available at launch as a 1.1. But as time went by a 1.6 and 1.8 was introduced and they are the engines that had most issues probably caused by stretching the engine beyond its design limits. Compared to a Zetec 1.8 the K series 1.8 is compact. I know several people who have reliable 2 litre K series engines in their cars but they have cost an absolute fortune to get into that state. I know of a couple who wish they had junked them and fitted a Ford Duratec.

Well with everything that is going on with vehicle technology, you shouldn't be surprised.

Smaller components cost less and easier to maintain while giving out the same engine power, that is just great engineering.

Congrats on the car btw.

Thanks just got home from a family day out tp the sea side 130 miles round trip averaged 57 mpg the car it replaced would struggle to get over 30 mpg. Very comfortable and quite on a long drive.

Is this 1.6 unit a Renault engine?

Is this the one with the DPF situated nearer to the engine?

Yes it is a Renault engin and the dpf is just after the turbo.

All Ford x-flow engines did not have the same cylinder spacing;inthe early days they did but later the 1.1/1.3 became the HCS which was 3 bearing engine as opposed to the 5 bearing engine of the 1.6.Ford also sorted some of the concerns of the Rover K series during the short period they owned Land Rover and this engine became their responsibility. You could easily tell the taller block of the 1.6 by locking at the water pump-if there was cylinder block visible above the pump,it was the taller block.

All "Kent" x-flow engines in 1.1, 1.3 and 1.6 capacity fitted to Escort Mk 1 & 2 Cortinas, Capris etc (basically RWD cars) had the same cylinder spacing, that had to they were all the same bore with a different stroke.

The "Valencia" x-flow used in FWD Fiestas and Escorts and Ka's was a different block competely.

In fact the Pre-x-flow used in Anglias and early Cortinas (1.0, 1.2 and 1.5 capacity) had exactly the same cylinder spacing as the later RWD blocks even though some were 3 bearing and some 5 bearing.

Just about the only interchangeable parts between the RWD and FWD engines were the Dizi and fuel pump.

For Valencia read HCS-different names for same engine.

There was also the pre-crossflow 1.34 engine used in the Classic(109E) until replaced by a five bearing 1.5.The 1.0,1.2 &1.34 were three bearing-the 1.5 five bearing.and don't forget the 107E Prefect which used the 1.0(997) and g/box out of the Anglia(105E).My 107E was fitted with a 1340GT-never made by Ford-just a combination of parts. The 1500/1600 engines in Cortinas were available with single barrel caburetor or with twin barrel carburetor and different camshaft in GT form.

I remember that Prefect, which must have been quite a good car. You got the OHV engine,4-speed gearbox and 4 doors without the ugly-bug styling of the Anglia.

Our neighbour had one while I was a kid. Just dug out the manual I still have for those (I know its sad). Looks like it was pretty much identical mechanically to the Anglia except for the final drive ratio which must have made it tiresome on A roads (thankfully motorways had only just been invented in the late 50's). 4775 revs at 70 mph, even at 60 it would have been doing 4093 revs. No wonder virtally no one had radio's you would never have heard one.

But at least the lower diff ratio benefited acceleration, the Anglia is quoted as 0-60 i 29 seconds, the Prefect would sprint there in 28 seconds.

As the prime minister at the time said, they had never had it so good.

Haha, comfortably outstripping a 2CV for acceleration, there!

The business part of the engine takes very little space. To visualise it, imagine four 397g cans of Carnation condensed milk in a row. They measure 80mm x 75mm diameter, the size of a slightly undersquare cylinder. Even larger engines with six or more 500ml cylinders don't seem so large when thought of in this way.
