I am starting a new job that will involve driving 100 motorway miles a day. I need to buy a new car that is economical, suitable for motorways and that my recently passed 18 year old can drive without me having to sell a kidney to insure. My budget is about £3500

I was thinking possibly a Toyota Aygo but I would be grateful for any recommendations as I know very little about small cars.

Thank you

My 18 year old student son has a 2010 Aygo. He likes it, I like it, it's very economical, "cheap" to insure and has been totally reliable. For such a small car with a tiny engine it holds its own well enough on the motorway too. Recommended.

Also consider its first cousins the Citroen C1 and the Peugeot 107. All pretty much the same cars.

It would be very easy to talk about Fiestas etc etc, but here's another shout for the C1.

My daughter's best friend passed her test about 7 years ago, and her first car was a very natty-looking Citroen. The same year that she passed her test, the perky little jalopy managed to get three young ladies and all their food, drink, backpacks, tents, multifarious festival necessities etc etc to the V Festival in Leeds and back without any hassle at all, including bumping through mucky fields and sitting in long queues of traffic for hours on end.

I was most impressed with the cut of the C1's jib, even though to some folks it might look like one of Postman Pat's shoes.

Can't speak for the mechanical side of things, and I know that French cars in general have the reliability index of a dormant volcano, but judging by the success of the adventure described above, its a great little first car.

The Aygo/C1/107/108 (all the same car) is a great option. Cheap to buy and insure, reliable (chain driven Daihatsu engine) and fun to drive. Clutches were weak on early cars and are still an issue on later models largely due to the very young and the elderly who often own them and buy only with a full service record proving its had fresh oil every year as neglect can cause the timing chain to fail.

The Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10 and larger Rio, i20, Yaris, Mazda 2 and Ford Fiesta 1.25/1.4 all with petrol engines are all good news too so open up your search a bit and buy the best you can afford rather than focusing on one particular model.

I'd also big up the Toyota Aygo/Citroen C1/Peugeot 107 (at that price, you are unlikely to get into a 108 which was the 107's successor from 2014 onwards). Never actually driven an Aygo, but driven heaps of C1's and 107's. We also used to have a Daihatsu Sirion, which had the same engine). In a car that light, the 1.0 engine is not the handycap you might expect, they are really nippy little things, literally bursting with energy like a puppy!. Don't get hung up on getting an Aygo thinking it will be more reliable than the other two, as has been mentioned, they are the same car underneath, just slightly different styling.

SLO - given the reliability reputations of Toyotas and 'French cars', is there any significant difference between the Aygo and the C1/107 in that regard, as they are 'the same car' ?

Great engines and gearboxes. Free revving and third gear is good to 80mph.

However Mark 1 Aygos developed a reputation for leaks. Ours let water in the front and rear door seals and around the rear lights. The electrics were also flaky (the French parts!). Heater fan control failure, meaning off or full only. A dash out or knuckle grazing job to change the failed part.

To check for leaks look in the boot well, take out the spare wheel and see if the floor is rusty. Also pull back seals at the bottom of doors and look for rust.

Aside from some spec, styling and trim differences they’re exactly the same underneath all jointly developed and built in the Czech Republic. Often the French versions are a little cheaper purely because of Toyota’s reputation and too many people not realising it’s the same car so these are usually the better buy but not by much. Condition, history and mileage are more important than the badge.

I'd go for something like a Hyundai i10

Thanks for everybodies advice.

I've been checking the recommendations with what is available in my area on Autotrader. I've just bought am immaculate 2015 Aygo 1.0 VVT-i x -play 5dr for £5400 . The owner had paid to have the My Touch Sat Nav and multimedia package fitted. It's got a reversig camera which is overkill for such a small car but a nice gadget anyway. The wife is really happy with it so I am in her good books......for now!

You didn’t hang about. Nice little car, I hope it serves you well, I’m confident it will.
