Done a few posts here over the last year and my choice of replacement for my 1.8 Tino automatic varied wildly. Went for this from local Nissan dealer.
In the end 7 seats was something we really wanted and as my wife’s family are flying over this week then it was decision time. It’s got the 1.6 CDi Renault start stop engine which Honest John seems to rate.
I really wanted an automatic and wasn’t after a diesel but I do enough long runs and will be driving to France this year so the fuel economy will be nice. Had Diesel vans for years so kind of know what to expect with maintenance. 12 month warranty and 2 years free servicing plus got £400 for my Tino which is what I paid for it and it’s only worth £100 now. Excited to pick it up on Thursday. I nearly went for an older XC90 (maybe next time) but they would’ve been car supermarket and seemed too good to be true, we were concerned about maintenence costs with a premium make plus we felt better buying off this Nissan dealer that has been around about 50 years.

Renault can be a bit hit and miss with engines both diesel and petrol. The old 1870cc lump that first appeared in the Renault 21 then seen life in various specs in numerous Renault’s, Volvo’s and Mitsubishi’s was a hard thing to kill with 250k upwards not uncommon but the later 1.9 dci motor used in the Mk II Laguna was notorious for turbo failure. The 1.5 dci is good but known for premature timing belt failure also but the later 1.6 seems to be one of their best recent efforts with few problems reported.

Don’t be complacent however with that Nissan badge up front, this is really just a Renault Megane on stilts with all the electrical gremlins common to them. It doesn’t do well in owner satisfaction surveys but look after it, accept the occasional minor issue and it should be fine comfortable transport.

People seem to forget that a good dealer car make or brake a car ownership experience, regardless of how reliable or otherwise the car is. Fingers crossed that the Qashqai doesn't give you any grief, but if the dealer has been around that long, hopefully any issues will be sorted quickly and painlessly.

Thanks yes the dealer is still family owned they say and established 1954 or something so it’s even older. To the above poster, yes I’m aware it’s mostly Renault but for the price and a 7 seater then I couldn’t seem to afford much better. Nissan parts aren’t too badly priced either and there should be plenty of stock and competing prices on spares I’m hoping. If it’s crap then I’ll probably go for a more premium make next time.

“If it’s crap then I’ll probably go for a more premium make next time.”

No guarantee of reliability there I’m afraid. BMW and Merc don’t have a great reputation for reliability either. You could be lucky here, plenty of people are with the Qashqai, it’s a nice car and to date the engine you’ve chosen is proving reliable, certainly more so than the bulk of the premium options. Relax and enjoy it, it looks a good one. It’s never a good idea to ask opinions after you’ve bought a car anyway, you do that beforehand.

Agree completely with SLO, I mean hopefully you will have no problem with your Qashqai, but if you do see fit to change again soon, you'd be much better going Toyota or Honda than anything 'premium'.

I was more just giving an update, rather than asking for advice after I’ve bought it. I did nearly buy a Toyota Verso, a 2015. Wanted something a bit bigger in the end. Not much choice for Toyota and Honda 7 seaters but they would’ve been my preference if in my budget. Thanks.
