My car pulls left, then other times pulls right... if i hold the steering wheel tightly the car will go straight which leads me to believe the actual tracking is straight... but something else is bent/moving/shifting to cause the car to want to pull either left or right.

Along with the pulling, the way the car makes contact with the road also changes or feels like it does....enough to make me need to slow going into corners. i know when the issue has shifted not only by the which way it pulls but also by how the car feels in regards to contact with the road as crazy as it sounds through the seat.

There is no noise that i can hear, just a pull which changes from left to right and vice versa... but the most unsettling thing is how the car feels when taking turns... like it rolls too much to one side depending on which way its pulling.

I've spoke to one place but they mentioned it could be very costly to get to the bottom of it which would involve stripping the car down to find the issue.

Sounds more like something is damaged/bent (or broken) in the steering mechanism.

No garage can tell you how much it is going to fix without having a good look at it, however - and that involves getting it up in the air, and a competent trained mechanic getting underneath it.Which costs money.

At the front, get all suspension bushes checked, both for excessive movement and for possible seizure of the bottom ball joint.

Steering, get the rack and its ball joints at the ends checked, and don't forget the universal joint at the bottom of the steering column, this can wear but it can also seize up, power steering got enough fluid and is it smooth in action.

At the rear, check all suspension joints same as the front, if RWD does the way the car drives/points vary when going from under power to overrun if so that points to the rear having an issue.

Generally, check for intact springs all round, are the spring top mounts secure and free to swivel at the front, and bounce test to check the effectiveness of the dampers whilst listening for odd noises, best to be looking underneath whilst an assistant bounces and rocks the car from side to side and tries to spin it around both ways.

With the parking brake applied get hold of each wheel and attempt to roll the car both forwards and backwards, this action can show up worn suspension bushes very quickly, as the wheels will move excessively in the arches.

Measure the distance front to rear wheel centres (wheelbase) with a tape measure both sides.

Get in another car and follow your car for a suitable drive, take various roads and watch how it performs just driven normally no need for excessive speed or violent maneuvers, sometimes a problem which is difficult to work out is blindingly obvious when watching the car driving along the road, also watch for crabbing which is when the car is going down the road with the rear wheels following a different line to the fronts.

You can do all of the above yourself easily, last of all when you are happy everything is working well with no wear or seizure found, get the alignment checked.

When it comes to alignment, sometimes self diagnosis is obvious when you think about it, if you drive along a straight road, especially in the wet, and allow one side of the car to travel on continuous white lines (these having less grip normally than the tarmac), say the nearside wheels are on the white line, if the vehicle pulls to the right that might suggest the front wheels are toeing out, if it pulls left that could point to excessive toe in, this is only a rough guide though.

any idea what it would cost to have someone have this looked at just roughly so i know i aint being taken for a ride ?

I have had the alignment checked previously a few times and it all sits within spec ( green on the prinout sheet)

i usually notice the change on how it's pulling after i've done a full lock u turn or 3 point turn when i come out of it i can instantly feel the change from how the car is sitting and then by which direction it pulls. i must be quite sensitive to how the tyres contact the road because i can feel it through the seat.... i mean i can feel it's off when the cars parked and not moving almost like a lean or the cars weight distribution has slightly changed.

You forgot to mention what make and model it is. Modern cars have electric rather than hydraulic power steering and this is much more likely to go wrong than the old tried and tested system, particularly on earlier examples such as the Mazda RX8 and Honda Civic 01-05. Both will feel sticky and need constant corrections to stay on the straight. I’m sure other such set ups will have similar problems as they age.

its a seat toledo 2017.. less than 20000 miles however it has taken a bit of a beating with potholes... and speed bumps.

i had the car aligned last week and everything is in the green/within spec however it intermittently pulls left or right and the car feels out of shape and either leans at the rear drivers side or at the front passengers side.

it isn't tire pressure nor is it the tyres themselves as i've tried rotating in all sorts of directions to see if it was a certain tire or two causing the issue.

what im wondering is can a car be aligned with a hunter system to spec if there was any damage to the chassis ?

could it be aligned to spec if there was any subframe damage ?

just trying to rule out what it could be as i've always heard if the car can be aligned then it cant be the chassis or subframes so just wanted to get that out the way first as i imagine that would be the most expensive fix.

cheers.

The car must still be in warranty surely? Take it back to the dealer and get them to check it out.

I would suggest a faulty tyre, possible ply seperation or a worn ball joint or rubber bushes.

faulty tyres could be the issue as i have noticed whenever i'm parked even if its for 10 mins if the road isn't flat the tyres seems to shape to the road and take a while to smooth out while driving... causing a pull/
