Panda 1.1 2010 - Stopping an oil leak - Chris M

First off, as a general rule, I don't like bodges.

Wife's Panda has a slight leak from the rear crankshaft oil seal. Just enough to leave the odd spot on the drive which I hate as after a while, the odd spots join up to make an unsightly mess. Proper fix of course would be gearbox out to replace the seal, but that seems like a lot of work for a very small leak.

Has anyone any experience of using the additives from the likes of Wynns or Redex to stop these leaks? Do they work and just as importantly, are there any downsides?

As far as I know all those product work by swelling up the material the seals are made off.

And that would be all seals that have contact with the oil/Ad mix.

So I'd get the box out.

Might be there's scoring that no amount of snake oil can fix.

tbh, i would just put a mat or suchlike on the drive where the car drips.

There are high mileage oil formulations that incorporate seal conditioners in the mix and also tend to be higher viscosity, Dunno what other :magic ingredients" they have, if any, but you might feel more comfortable with one of those, from a big name oil blender, than with an additive,

Meanwhile, newspaper?

Thanks for the suggestions but I think newspaper/mat would look worse than the oil spots. And it would look like I couldn't be bothered to fix the car. I can't remember the last car we had one with an oil leak.

Put an absorbant on the car where no one will see it, field dressing/sanitary towel/incontinence pad stylee?

If it is just the odd spot now and again, it would be cheaper and less hassle to jetwash the drive every couple of months in the summer.

Small leaks like that can go on for years and not get worse: I had an Escort II for 3 years that leaked from one of the driveshaft seals on the gearbox and the quantity of oil drops never changed, so I eventually just ignored it.

Man have I got the bodge for you......(NOT)...,.,apparently, people put brake fluid in their oil.

I THINK the theory is that brake fluid agglomerates some components in the oil into globules which then plug the leak. There can be a similar reaction with coolant contamination from a head gasket leak, but that may be more likely to cause oil failure.

I'd think this'd only be appropriate as a last gasp experiment with a terminal / disposable car, which isn't your situation.

New one on me.

Please don't be offended if I don't take up your suggestion edlithgow :-)

I'm no chemist, but I guess the active ingredient in the leak stopping additives may be present in brake fluid? The wife's Panda may be 7 years old and done 124k, but it's not ready for the scrappy just yet.
