Speaking as someone who has been doing this for a long time I can tell you why this happened.
Cars are just too dam reliable.
Back in the days of BL every driver owner at least knew how to open a bonnet and check fluid level,
And not just the scoosh bottle.
Evey cold morning there'd be A Metro or similar spining over getting sloower and slower as the battery died.
Your Dad or Grandad knew this,
Even if they didn't change the oil themselves they knew it had to be done every 6k or 6 months.
Of course modern cars being more reliable the first clue there's something wrong is usually too late to save the b*****s.
The timing chain in your engine has it's tension maintained by oil pressure
Crap pressure means chain tension goes.
EOS.
All the old b*****s tell you how cars were better back the,
You could work on them yourself.
No b***** computors,
Well I'm still here to state "Crap".
The were unreliable money pits if not maintained.
That meant opening the bonnet.
Your little old lady who only drove to church killed this engine before you got a hold of it.
Not your fault,
or hers.
Modern cars are just to reliable to a fault.
And the fault is oil changes.
This is going to cost you hundreds.
If you get it done then remeber this if nothing at all.
Forget makers service schedules and get the oil and filter changed every 6 months.
