Nissan Micra - Nissan Micra 2002 Tempest 1.0L Rattling from Engine bay - Callum Evans

Last year i bought a 52 plate Nissan Micra with 9900 miles on the clock from a family friend.

Just recently I have noticed a rattling sound coming from the engine bay. I can't hear it when it's a cold start but it comes back when i rev it.

Once it's warm, it rattles all the time. I am thinking maybe something is loose but the sound is coming from what it seems like inside the engine.

It just recently passed an MOT in November so i am guessing it's nothing serious but I am worried it's going to cost a lot to be fixed.

The current mileage is just over 25k.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers

9900 miles in 16 years? That is less than 700 miles per year, hoiw often has it been serviced with fresh oil and filters?

Recommended every 6000 miles so may only have had one change of oil, rattle so could well be a worn timing chain. Not a cheap fix, take it to a competent garage for their diagnosis.

I would have to look at the service manual. It's having a service on Friday so would the rattle go then or is it hard to say?

The previous owner was an old lady who only used it for going to church, hence the low mileage.

Dodgy dealers selling 'clocked' cars often used the same story when prospective buyers thought low mileage was a good thing. Unusual for it to be a true history as in this case.

It was a private sale.

We know the people very well. I have the orignal purchase reciept from 2002.

If you look at the mileage on the MOT check, you'll see the mileage on there.

I am just worried about this rattling.

Speaking as someone who has been doing this for a long time I can tell you why this happened.

Cars are just too dam reliable.

Back in the days of BL every driver owner at least knew how to open a bonnet and check fluid level,

And not just the scoosh bottle.

Evey cold morning there'd be A Metro or similar spining over getting sloower and slower as the battery died.

Your Dad or Grandad knew this,

Even if they didn't change the oil themselves they knew it had to be done every 6k or 6 months.

Of course modern cars being more reliable the first clue there's something wrong is usually too late to save the b*****s.

The timing chain in your engine has it's tension maintained by oil pressure

Crap pressure means chain tension goes.

EOS.

All the old b*****s tell you how cars were better back the,

You could work on them yourself.

No b***** computors,

Well I'm still here to state "Crap".

The were unreliable money pits if not maintained.

That meant opening the bonnet.

Your little old lady who only drove to church killed this engine before you got a hold of it.

Not your fault,

or hers.

Modern cars are just to reliable to a fault.

And the fault is oil changes.

This is going to cost you hundreds.

If you get it done then remeber this if nothing at all.

Forget makers service schedules and get the oil and filter changed every 6 months.

She had the car from new. The only thing she had done to it was the clutch because she was dead. I am sure I have the receipt for that.

I have told the guy servicing it to have a look to see what he thinks.

How did she have the clutch done if she wad dead?

Was it due to asbestos poisining due to burning the clutch out in less than 10k?

A further safety point, if it is still on the original (now 16 year old) tyres it woukld be a good idea to replace them, this may be among the recommendations when it is serviced.

I had an 02 Micra that developed a rattle in the engine bay.

I found it to be the very thin heatshield over the exhaust manifold had rusted through and was merrily rattling against it.

Once removed the rattle disappeared - maybe worth a look

Sorry I meant deaf hahahaha.

Graham, it was exactly this. The bolts had come off so it was just rattling.
