Hi

I've got a VW Caddy 2013 - Bluemotion - Auto.

I had a knocking noise on Saturday for 20 minutes or so. Came back on Monday, then got worse yesterday.

It doesnt happen when I'm stationary.

It happens at low revs.

It gets worse faster I go but seems to stop at around 25mph.

This video will give you a much better idea.

There's a few drinks in it if someone can point me in the right direction.

I had a very similar, intermittent noise on my recently departed transit connect. After a few trips to the garage, where, as is typically the case with intermittent faults, it wouldn't do the noise!. Eventually it was tracked down to a weight on the inside of the N/S rear wheel catching on the handbrake cable, which had come loose. A plastic cable tie sorted it out.

Cheers for replies - much appreciated. I'm going to upload a new video onto youtube soon. I've had the wheel off and when its started and accelerator pressed the discs seem to get stuck every so often and the half shaft stops and a little grind is heard before it rotates properly again. I think it started when I went through a decent sized puddle so they may be something caught somewhere. I'll try and get the video uploaded and pos there for your ideas. Appreciate it - thank you.

Could be either a drive shaft splined coupling fault or the transmission is failing.

The DSG box in these is notorious for problems and hugely expensive to repair or replace so let’s hope it’s not the transmission itself. To be honest, even if it isn’t I’d offload anything fitted with one of these gearboxes before it’s 5th birthday anyway. Best of luck but you really do need to bite the bullet and take it to a garage, preferably a VW specialist.

Looks and sounds like pads intermittently catching on the disc, possibly due to sticky half-seized caliper piston? I would take the pads and disc off, clean thoroughly and grease the pad mountings so they slide freely.

Bang off any disc rust, grind down any lipping. Re-install with just one pad, then carefully press the brake pedal to pump the piston beyond to where it usually sits (you don't want to expel it from the caliper cylinder!) and work it to and fro a few times.. Best to have a helper do the brake pedal while you watch the pad move out for you to lever it back in.. Then reinstall the second pad and road test.

Cheers again for your time with this - really is appreciated.

I've had a few bad experiences with my main dealer - won't go into depth.

I've driven it for a couple of days with zero noise so it's bizarre that it's coming and going.

I think you're right though - it's probably going to need a garage to have a proper look.

I'll keep you all informed of any change and if I can find out what the problem is.
