VW Passat - VW Diesel EGR Cooler - Gareth Staton

Hi - I was driving along merrily yesterday when my 2014 reg Passat's engine management warning light started flashing and the care went into limp mode. My local independent VW specialist have diagnosed an EGR problem. That sounds like quite a common problem and there is quite a bit of press coverage linking this to the emissions fix (which I had done about 10 months ago). I've read some reports that in some cases VW have covered the cost of getting this fixed.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

I'm waiting for a quote from my independent but they estimate £600-£700, so obviously I'm keen to avoid this if I can. But the dealer wants £60 for the 2 min job of plugging in a laptop and reading the fault codes, so I don't want to fork out for that if I'm going to get nowhere.

Any thoughts on whether it's worth a try with a dealer?

;I've no knowledge of the particular car, but I received plenty of good advice on problems with my previous car after joining an online forum specifically formed for owners of that model.

You could google VW Passat forums and post your question on there, perhaps?

If it is an EGR problem then VW should fix it for free.

You havn't really got anything to loose.

Argue your case if necessary & walk away if you can't get it done for free. ( or less than you've been quoted )

Had exactly the same problem with my wee Polo 1.2 TDi recently. VW replaced it without quibble because I had the emissions update carried out. Mine has a full main dealer history and VW have been great at offering goodwill well beyond the warranty on several items but you should still be covered for the EGR even without a dealer history.

VW are giving quite generous warranties on any problems for a significant amount of time/mileage after the 'emissions fix' has been done.

I'd suggest speaking to VW GB customer services, and putting your case a bit more forcefully.

Just as a note, Audi are providing goodwill to owners who experience issues with Injectors, DPF systems and EGR valves on vehicles that have had the emission update carried out, not all dealers will offer but anyone experiencing these issues should push for this.

Its probable that VW seat and Skoda are offering something similar, although I do not know for certain.

I had the Emissions recall done on my 2012 Alhambra Last July. The flashing coil light came on last Wednesday. Called out SEAT Assistance, EGR fault, dropped off car at dealer on Thursday, SEAT authorised 100% good will Friday & dealer ordered part, collect car Tomorrow, Monday.
