This days there is increased use of technology in car parking = ranging from ANPR through pay-by-card to parking apps. However, the one area where there is absolutely no progress is making parking charges more linear (and fair). A few days ago I picked up a friend from a hospital in the area when a decision to discharge them was made at six in the evening. The pickup area is limited to ten minutes and so I used the car park. But with a slight delay I went over the 30 minutes for £1. The next level is £3 for two hours so the extra two minutes cost £1 each! I had a similar thing there some months ago when I took someone to the hospital for a small procedure. Things overran slightly, as they often do in these cases, and again there was a £2 hike (50%) for about five minutes over. Motorists are a soft target for councils and hospitals but at least they should play fair!

So with all this hi-tech it should be possible to pay in 5-minute increments. Then people will grumble because they haven't the right money and the machine won't give change. So they have to pay by card .... And so it goes on. Most people resent paying to park (you may not) so there will always be something to grumble about - this one costs £5 but it's only £2.50 down the road ...

One thing I learned from my Dads long stays in hospital, when they disharge a person they do not go straight away, they have to wait usually anyway for a letter or possibly a prescription, something else.

I used to go back to the car and wait for a phone call saying they were at the entrance then drive to pickup area as its only 20mins allowed, otherwise its a hefty fine,

I thought Farnborough hospital kent was bad enough for parking til I went to Kings denmark hill, that place is terrible for parking, so bad I drop off -park about a mile up the road and wait for phone call to pick up again -imo only way to do it now -

We were in malaga recently.

After the first hour the car parks charged by the minute..... with a sliding scale depending on length of time,... what time of day... and a maximum charge...

Further to parking charges in Spain, locally they've been revised for 2018:

""...The first 92 minutes of stay cost 0.0297584 euros per minute and from 93 minutes 0.0198391 euros per minute. Thus, half an hour costs 0.89 euros, one hour 1.78 and two hours 4.48..."

The Spanish bureaucracy love their decimal places!

Regarding the imposition of parking charges to the hundredth decimal, what finally happened in Spain (as far back as 2006 IRRC) was that the practice of charging by the hour or half hour was finally ruled illegal and all car parks immediately had to set charges per minute. Surprise, surprise - the rate for the first minutes is a lot higher than the rest of the minutes and the overall cost of parking is unchanged, so no one saves with the new system (except for Lewis Hamilton).

Attempting to find a space in ANY hospital car park is enough to induce a myocardial infarction (with specfic reference to Stoke Mandeville)!!!

Basingstoke isn't bad really, you get 30 mins free..at least in the car park outside maternity. I've always found a space somewhere. However I don't agree with charging for parking at hospitals.

... I don't agree with charging for parking at hospitals.

Neither do I in principle, but neither do I agree with being unable to park as an out-patient because of the visitors' cars occupying all the spaces. Some urban hospitals' car-parks could be occupied by all sorts of other 'visitors' as well.

I suspect it will get worse if they continue to keep closing hospitals/departments as people will have to go elsewhere to get the treatment they need, making some car parks impossible to get a space which has happened already in some

too many people being squeezed into one hospital, I wonder how much more of this we can take?
