2003 Focus 1.6 - Mk1 Focus 1.6 thumping noise - stumpyturbo

Hi guys.

I just aquired a 2003 1.6 focus. When its at about 1000rpm theres a vibration through the cars interior and from idle if you blip the throttle quickly tgere is a loud thumping noise. Does thos sound like a wearing engine/gearbox mount or something more sinister?

If its diesel could be the DMF.

Ah sorry i forgot to mention its a petrol with the zetec-se engine

It does sound very much like a worn or broken engine/gearbox mounting.

I would certainly check them all before looking any further.

How would i go about checking the mounts?

Make a physical inspection of them!

Are there any split or broken rubber components present? Do any feel particularly soft and/or have they been contaminated by any oil leaks?

Are any of the metal components fractured?

Are any of the mounting bolts loose or missing?

Clearly this inspection has to be carried out from the underside of the vehicle so the correct lifting and safety proceedures must be followed beforehand. If, for any reason, you don't feel confident to deal with these matters then I would strongly recommend you pay a visit to your local garage.

Just checked the engine and gearbox mounts. The engine mount seems fine but the gearbox mount moves about 2mm and the rubber is breaking away and can see the gearbox itself. Pretty sure the gearbox mount has had it
