BMW 5 Series F10 - Monitoring 12 volt battery - Jay6

I would like to monitor my battery with some sort of in-car gadget so that I don't end up with a dead battery. It would need to be portable so that I could also use it in my wife's Yaris.

Any ideas or experience would be greatly appreciated.

It's my opinion that devices such as this give a false sense of security to the user. Of course, if that's all you require that is fine. They are little better than a voltmeter and simply measuring the voltage of the battery can be misleading.

If you want to do it properly, all you need is a multimeter and some knowledge and someone you can ask for advice.

I have done a video on my channel which shows you how to comprehensively test your battery and alternator. If you test every 6 months and write down your results, you will be able to track and chart battery deterioration. You can ask for advice via the video comments.

When the battery starts to show increased stress (eg when weather turns cold) you'll be able to know to replace rather than relying on the inconvenience of a breakdown to tell you.

These quick plug in devices give very limited information, and certainly will not give battery condition. The BMW will be running a smart charge battey management system with a very complicated monitoring system on thr battery. On the F10 models, you are likely to get a battery warning on the dash display when there is a problem. Testing the battery with the method Mr Cyd has suggested could be very dangerous on a vehicle this complicated and could lead to serious electronic malfunctions. No car or battery maker would condone thismethod. Probably ok on an old Cortina or Marina. We have moved on since these cars.

You should get a reading of around 14.4 volts with the engine running that tells you that the alternator is charging OK so if you get a flat battery its either duff or you have something draining it when not in use

It may not tell you much else but its a quick way of checking the charging system - if its accurate.

Thanks to all respondents.

I'll take your comments as an overall thumbs down.

That was the case years ago (as long as you did not have a Lucas alternator) but not necessarilly with a modern smart alternator. Checked my BMW once, at a hot idle it varied anywhere between a high of 14.8 and low of about 13.
