Lost power 2002 E220 ELegance estate

My car has been performing beautifully , as i was accelerating earlier i heard a slight buzzing or wheezing noise , fairly faint and only upon accelerating . I was close to home but when i got to within 10 yards, NOTHING! , Engine running OK,but unable to drive forward or reverse, clearly something has gone. its pushed into a bay and is fine . I have breakdown insurance but like to fathom out a few ideas/suggestions from anyone before proceeding, thanks, Brian.

Not sure if the transmission fluid level is acessable on these,

probably not.

Ideally a diagnostic of the gearbox with Merc Star diagnostics but unless you have a local Merc specialist then it's relay to a garage that does.

Transmission fault codes read first then possibly it "may" just need a gearbox filter and fluid change.

If there is a dipstick the check the colour of the fluid by wiping the stick on a clean white cloth,

Good fluid is cherry red,

Not dark or black.

Oh and it doesn't stink bad.

ThANKS , I WILL TRY THIS.. I have left it 24 hours and its now back in gear.. but i am not trusting it to drive anywhere

The on board computer works fine and it hasnt flagged up anything with the transmission.. strange that its back working in gear.. i used some redex fuel cleaner last week.. i hope that hasnt anything to do with it .

Ive just gone out and tried it, and it is back in gear , forward and reverse, but i am not confident to drive it anywhere..
