Fiat 500C - Please will someone offer advice? - RW8319

I have no experience of buying cars at all. I am due to purchase a second hand 500C 2012 tomorrow. I have just purchased a full check and I've received a warning about adverse data regarding mileage.

There are three records of its mileage from two previous owners. This is what I've been given.

BVRLA04/11/201414,029RMI MIL'GE30/09/201416,768RMI MIL'GE10/10/2013

8,350

Only just passed my test, never bought a car before and have no one to advise me. Why would mileage be recorded twice within a couple of months and recorded as lower than before?

Everything else is clear.

I'd be so grateful if you could offer your advice.

Thank you.

If you could edit your post, then it might be readable. You need to put some spaces in there. I think it should read as follows :

BVRLA 04/11/2014 14,029

MIL'GE 30/09/2014 16,768

MIL'GE 10/10/2013 8,350

As the car 3 years old or more, what's the numberplate on it ? If it's over 3 years old, then MOT records can assist in verifying mileage.

If that is the only information available, however, then I'd be cautious. Basically, you ask why there is a discrepancy, and if it's dismissed as nothing then you insist on them putting that in writing - BEFORE you pay over a penny or sign anything.

You're quite right about the spaces - that would have annoyed me too! My apologies. In my original post they were there, I promise. When I hit return the format seemed to change (I think because I copied and pasted the info).

Thank you for your advice, it's very much appreciated.

Have a great evening.

Dodgy mileage?

I would walk & buy one from ANother garage.

Plenty out there so get one without a dodgy past.

Is it a private sale or from a garage?

Fiat 500C - Please will someone offer advice? - RW8319

It's from a garage. This one ticks all of the other boxes and is being sold with 27,000 miles on the clock.

Thank you.

Have you looked up the MOT status?

What does the service record say? Fat fingered owners and Mot testers make mistakes but you need to corroborate the info with the service record. If it hasn't been serviced every year you should walk away, this is particularly important if it's the twin air engine. The old 4cyl 1.2 is quite simple and pretty much anyone can service them but the twin air is fragile and doesn't take neglect, abuse or incorrect maintenance well. Pay extra for a good car from a main dealer instead, it'll pay dividends in the long run. Post the link to the advert if you can and we'll take a look. There's often a wealth of information there.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

Long and short of it is I want to have an automatic and can't find many auto versions with exactly the right style I want. Thought I'd finally found the right one then found this discrepency on the report.

Do you really want an auto one of these? It is a robotised manual gearbox which can be a bit quirky .Have you driven a 500 with this gearbox? If not ,I would strongly advise you to try before you buy.

Before you buy one of these, just have a read here :

Time for a rethink. While I like the 500, particularly the simple 1.2 petrol I really wouldn't advise going for the Dualogic auto option which is jerky in operation (as are most single clutch automated manual boxes) and prone to problems fairly early on in life. It's especially poor linked with the twin air engine, the gearbox just doesn't suit the engines characteristics.

By all means go for a 1.2 petrol with a manual box and a full history but that's where the wise money ends in relation to the Fiat 500 I'm afraid. If you must have an auto then look elsewhere.

This particular model (1.2) holds the record as the only car that proved not to have the power to pull itself up onto the top deck of a standard car transporter at the import centre.

The angle of climb was hardly steep (we are talking modern tackle here) and even taking a run up didn't get the vehicle up the decks, the 3 cyl Corsas required a run up but they would manage.

Ok you're not asking it to do this, but it would be the same scenario if you live in hilly country or for example visit areas of the country with severe hills, eg i doubt if the car could make a hill start on Porlock Hill, steeper are available.

Must you have an automat C?

A manual Fiat 500 would be more reliable

And that's a better bet being a manual, stick the dualogic in there and you are able to feed even less power (power? i use the term loosely) in because the biting point is pre set.

Hadn't seen that clip before, the only way we could get the worst of the automated manuals on was for the driver to take a run up and get the car onto the back of the transporter, then a colleague would raise the rear deck up to level with driver sitting inside car, however knowing you are in a car that has little if any precise maneuvering control or power when your rear wheels are hanging over clear space 8ft up in the air is a little disconcerting even when you know what you're doing, you just hoped it wouldn't stall out on you as you started to move once level.

To be fair the 500 was the very worst of its type for my job, though they would load ok i got an Aygo MMT stuck in the standard deck cut outs once, never known another car do that (avoided putting an automated manual in that position afterwards), ended up having to ratchet the thing out with the deck tie downs.

I wouldn't personally recommend any single or twin clutch robotised box to anyone.

Long time ago I know, hit this thread while researching 500s.

I bet £50 that third one was supposed to be 17029, never understood it but some people mix up 4 and 7 depending on how they're written.

It's probably not to do with how they are written. User may have been hitting the numeric keypad, where 7 is just above 4.

If in doubt...walk away. You are in doubt.
