2008 VW Polo 1.4 - Gearbox Synchro - Damien Tyson

Hi All

My car has been in to a trusted garage today as it has started crunching ever-so-slightly when going into third gear. All other gears are fine. No problems selecting gears at all.

The mechanic says the synchro is on it's way out. It's an old-ish car so I'm not prepared to have the synchro replaced, and it's just a car I use to get to and from work (about 31 miles a day, extra-urban ish).

What's the absolute worst that'll happen if I keep driving it? Will it eventually get worse and worse and then not go into third at all?

Age and mileage would help.

You may have to learn how to change gear like us old-uns did and marry the revs to road speed.

You can as Tom says learn to double declutch but you can probably extend its life by driving carefully, give it time before you push the gearlever right home, there is obviously still some synchro action so just give it time to work.
