Hi all

Thanks for comments from my previous post.

Well, car is "fixed" total bill £1800 reduced to £1500 by dealer as i "did" get my car serviced there every year Not a penny from VW themselves.

The situation is now i am concerned, £1300 egr valve and cooler replacement. i ran the car for 2 weeks with the light coming on maybe 5 or 6 times

But i have since been reading up and i had oil loss and was at 75% which could have affected turbo and other parts apparantly.

just paid £1500 on a car worth 5-6k, is oil loss normal?

its 09 reg with 66k i'm still pretty pee'd off about the situation..

I don't uderstand oil loss, did it chuck oil out when the egr (they all do that sir but seeing as its VW tough) failed, or does it simply use a bit.

Would 75% of oil loss mean you still had 75% of capacity still in sump so say down to min on the dipstick...does it have a dipstick?, or was it showing 75% on the dash?

Either way if its still had 75% of max capacity in the sump it should not have affected the turbo or other parts, we've had posters here using the oil pressure light as a dipstick before and the engine's still running reasonably well.

Or have i got the wrong end of the stick and its using oil in large amounts now?

when they gave the the repair bill they said oil level was 75% so they topped it up!

my concern, is that normal for egr failure and could more issues be on the horizon

as far as i know oil usage is fine now but haven't checked, car only been driven maybe 50 miles since repair.

The egr valve controls only air/exhaust gases. The cooler attached to it is part of the coolant circuit. There is no engine oil part of the egr valve. So any oil loss can't be blamed on a faulty egr valve.

75% sounds like it was on on minimum, or maybe it was half way up the stick so they put half a litre in and came up with a fag packet calculation.

Either way i can't see any reason to worry at all, just keep an eye on the levels as normal weekly.

They didn't do you any favours on that bill considering regular customer, as such they'd never have to worry about me darkening their doorstep again, nor the maker or its subsidiaries, but thats just me.

Please don't tell me they charged you £20+ for topping the engine oil up, that would just be the icing on the cake.

oh yes i noticed £8 next to the 75% level, ex vat it would have been.

i do mixed driving everyday not just town but perhaps not long enough on duel carrigway so that's it for me and Diesels i think, and main dealer servicing.

my local dealer did what is could, but vw get get stuffed.

shame i love interior quality of golf gti and golf r etc...
