Time for SUV, MPV, UTE designated parking - Fishermans Bend

Parked up in our car at local supermarket car park as far away from store as possible. Space chosen with no neighbours. On return there was a BMW X5 one side and a Discovery the other side. Couldn't see what was driving towards us from either side until we were half way out of space.

Isn't it time SUV, MPV, UTE/Pick-ups had their own designated parking area on grounds of safety of car drivers?

No. But I do wish they made the parking bays another foot wider, I believe the average width of cars has increased steadily over the last 40 years.

Who takes any notice of parking space lines anyway, not many, supermarkets as has been mentioned before will not alter the widths as it will cut down on customer parking, we cant have that now can we. so we have to put up with it or dont go. simples.

The number of parking spaces is usually defined as a minimum to comply with planning appications requirements, using the minimum size of space to meet those same planning requirements.

So blame the planning laws, not the supermarkets.

yeah right

And theres me thinking Supermarkets get what they want regardless of planning laws

We have one of the biggest supermarket's convenience stores near here. In the original application they were going to deliver at the back. Never happened so instead they block half a narrow street - often in the rush hour...

brum, you're correct. Not that will make any difference to car parking spaces or domestic garage sizes. The latter nowadays often used as shed/storeroom because many cars will no longer fit.

A son works in Texas - the multistorey car park has 3 different sized spaces.

1) Standard - takes X5 sized car no problem

2) Large - even a 20ft Chevrolet Tahoe fits with some extra length available

Just introduced

3) Ex Large - heaven knows what kind of truck this maybe

All parking is undercover to try & keep the cars cool enough to be driven off at the end of the day.

Very sensible. How about a muddy field for the 4x4's, after all who needs tarmac?

So 'Fishermans Bend' made 2 threads basically whining about SUV/pick-up type vehicles, just because people had the temerity to park alongside him, meaning that his view was obstructed when reversing out of his parking space ?

Wow, dread to think what he'd have done if someone had parked close to him so that he'd struggled to get in the door. Probably firebomb an Isuzu factory !

That's why "expert" opinion is to reverse into supermarket spaces, so you can drive out forwards (not that I do!).

RT, before you make an assumption about how I park, please engage brain before typing. I always reverse into a parking space. With the respective vehicles obstructing the view, I still couldn't see either side until I was half way out.

BTW RT, what do you drive?

BTW RT, what do you drive?

A big SUV (about the same length/width as a Mondeo but heavier)

I appreciate your honesty. Your choice of vehicle explains your comments.

My observations are all about being considerate to fellow road users, people buying what they need, rather than something some are clearly unable to drive.

Nothing wrong with the "odd rant" if it lowers your blood pressure.

I had a range rover parked witnin a centimetre of the front of may car when there was adequate room in front of him. I got out and asked if he could move a bit forwards so that I could get out, cue much grumbling...

Trouble is it's 110Fahrenheit in summer & still in 70s in winter - desert - no muddy fields

Round here the mark of an incompetent driver is to drive a big 4x4...No country dweller who needs to get around will have one as the raads are too narrow. For trownies only...

As for starting two threads on the subject... !!!!!!!!!

True, but maybe I didn't make it clear that I meant in the UK.

It hits 45'C here in Australia in summer so the local shopping centre is going to install solar cell arrays over the car park. Shades the cars and gives the shopping centre free electricity. Win. Win. I know it is the light that generates the electricity not the heat but it is the heat that fries you when you get in the car. You won't find me getting leather seats in a car.

I am constantly bemused by this hablt of marking out car parks as if we are still driving sixties cars. If car parks markings are redone it seems more to create an extra space or two. I am only aware of one car park that was remarked with larger spaces. However this was a private car park belonging to a pub/restaurant where the landlord has a slight mobility problem and is aware of his customer's needs.
