Volkswage Golf - VW Golf 1.6 FSI 2005 knocking noise. - JakeRyan

Hello, new to the website as I have encountered a problem with my car.

It recently failed its MOT on 3 things. Leak in rear exhaust, broken front coil spring and hole in cv boot. So I got a mutal friend to fix these at his garage, and all was good driving away until I was 15 minutes in and car started making a knocking / klunking sound from the front. The noise only happens when going over bumpy / uneven roads. No noise at steady speed and even road. When I shake the steering wheel it the sound comes back but not as bad as going over bumps. Obviously something is loose and rattling about but he couldnt find what it was. Im putting it back into a different garage on monday and hopefully they can find what is wrong with it. There is no noise when streering in full lock so dont think its the ball joints but I dont have a great knowledge of mechanics, need professional/experienced input!

Any clues guys ? More brains the better lol,

2005 Golf with 76k on the clock if that helps!

Much appreciated.

Thanks.

If it wasn't knocking before - take it back to the repairer to check

Already put the car back, he couldn't find the problem. So I took car back for its MOT re test and not giving it back to him (still passed MOT). And quite frankly I don't trust the guy with my car he's unreliable. Was a recommendation from a friend.

If still passing MOT - I'd check the anti roll bar bushes first these can be prone to rattling over rough surfaces and might have been disturbed when the CV boot/spring work was done

Just in case - has the steering wheel been adjusted so that it's further towards you (eg by different driver at garage) - Sometimes a little wear in the steering adjustment splines can show up when wheel adjusted pulled out at it's extremity that goes away when pushed further back

Volkswage Golf - VW Golf 1.6 FSI 2005 knocking noise. - Fiesta-Ranger

Ford Lookers heard a knocking noise from my Ford Fiesta Black Special Edition and requested time for further investigation. I declined and was happy to carry on. You can imagine how much money I would have spent with official Ford technicians !!! Turns out the heater motor was slowly on its way out. It's a pig to get to it. What happens is the noise slowly gets louder and louder. The bearings go, the blades shatter to bits. Access to the heater motor is via the dashboard for my Fiesta. Yup...whole dashboard got to come out. I hightly advise breakers yard for the part and a 3rd party garage to fit it. I saved nearly £200-00 quid and the part came from a sports model. If it is the heater motor, you've got 2 years before it drives you mad. Also, when the heater motor is faulty, blows the thermal resistor that gives you the hot air, and you're stuck with cold air permanently (Ouch for Winter). They are around £40-00 each, and will keep blowing until the heater motor is replaced. I wouldn't like to think what they cost for a VW. You can only get thermal resistors from VW directly, nowhere else, again possibly breakers.
