DVLA change of ownership fines - Lawrence howarth
Ive been going through the same problems with the DVLA over change of ownership of my car.i posted the slip first class as soon as the new keeper drove it away.i thought I had done the right thing posting the slip as what the DVLA wants.but a few weeks later the fines kept dropping through my letter box .when you try to phone these people ,you have to go through a robot system meaning you can't talk to anyone.i sent 6 letters at once all identical explaining I do not own the vehicle.but they kept on sending the threatening letters fines and possible court action.so I kept writing to these people.and at the bottom o letter I repeated I will not be paying any fines because I have not done anything wrong.it has gone on for a number of weeks now and they seemed to have backed down.i was prepared to go to court.you must photocopy every letter in order to defend yourself.i cannot prove that I posted the slip but at the same time they cannot prove you didn't post it.i kept explaining that their system was flawed .we should be allowed to change ownership in line.please comment if you have had similar experiences.

Not had a similar experience luckily. But a word of advice, when call centres use a robot system, just ignore every option, it'll repeat it a few times and then 90% of the time it will just transfer you to a human.

The online system worked fine when I bought one car and sold another (both privately) in June. But I was lucky with my timing - it seems mad that an online facility is switched off for 12 hours a day.

This has been covered here before.

When dealing with ANY official body, keep copies of all letters (photo them with your phone even) and ALWAYS obtain proof of posting.

I was stung by DVLA recently.

I sold my car on the 29th June, and put the V5C in the post that night.

They didn't give me a refund for the July tax as 'they only received the V5C slip in the post on the 3rd July'.

OK, I should have used the online service, but I thought they always worked from the date of exchange as long as the post mark was before the end of the month.

Sent off the change of ownership slip same day I got the replacement car, received the acknowledgment almost by return of post-on the back,it stated that the duty owed me would be sent in six to eight weeks-it turned up three days later.

Thanks for your comments guys .i will look into the change of ownership online .what bothers me is how much money do the DVLA make out of vunarable people who would just pay the first fine with the threat of a £1000 fine also court action even though they have done the right thing..
