Vw Passat 07 plate - Just bought a used car which has a issue - Jon199102

Morning all

I recently purchased a used 07 plate Passat with 90k on its clock. It has a full service history and had its cambelt and water pump changed. At first I couldn't find anything wrong with it. The test drive felt smooth and I left the engine running and I couldn't find any issues.

I purchased the car on the 1st. Driving it home I noticed a vibration in the steering wheel which has now being resolved (after two trips to the dealer)

The main issue I seem to be having is after drive down the motorway or for a fair distance I get a strong vibration in the cabin. It starts gentle then slowly builds up to the point its shaking the cabin.

After taking it back the first time they said the engine is in a greacondition and that they thing it might be the regen. I did my research and crossed that on my list as that certainly isn't the cause. After that I asked for one of the engineers to sot in the car and he said it is properly the fly wheel. They kept it in all day and as I went to collect it they saod due to the age and the milage there's nothing they can do. Where if it was a new car they would swap the fly wheel straight away.

I feel well and truly fobbed off. Where do I stand with this? Am I within my right to request a refund or do they have a obligation to fix the issue as it was there when I purchased it? They did mention that it wouldn't be covered by there warranty which came with the vehicle. At the time of purchase they didn't mention anything about anything not being covered

Its a 2.0 TDI 140 BTW

Thank you and sorry for any spelling mistakes. I typed this up on my phone

reject the car. a flywheel and clutch will cost you abut a £1000, more if you use a vw dealer.

Agreed. Look up 'Consumer Rights Act'. The car is faulty, you have the absolute right, in law, to reject it and get a FULL refund within the first 4 weeks.

I aghree with the others, although if you haven't already done so it's worth making sure the wheels are balanced.

Hi all thanks for your replies.

I'm waiting for a call back from there manager at some point today. I know there backs are up againts the wall with this. If they offer the solution to repair the vehicle should I take it or should I presume this is the start of the road to further issues?

To add the wheel balancing fixed the vibration after the second trip. I've drove over 150 miles since and its not done it once.

Thanks all

I’m confused.com now!

If balancing has fixed it, then what is the continuing problem?

The balancing fixed the shaking in the steering wheel. The shaking at idol in the cabin is on going.

I went to a local indie Volkswagen garage near me who said that my clutch had gone and it sounds like the DMF.

Had a call back from there used car sales manager who is now speaking with there deputy.

Just a update.

They are now going to replace the flywheel. Had to go through there deputy principal to get to this point.

This morning I took it to a indie Volkswagen garage. He sat in the vehicle and put his foot on the clutch. Pushed it down a few times and said that the clutch has gone too.

I mentioned this to Evans halsures service rep who said we would have to look at the car and it would depend on the wear. If the wear isn't that bad then they wouldn't replace it. What do you guys think?

Also to add they can only get the car in on the 10th of Oct due to the courtesy car. Would a damaged fly wheel cause more damage in the mean time?

Thanks

As said, it sounds like the flywheel (dual mass flywheel, part of the clutch assembly).

If that is the case then basically, you are within your legal rights to demand a full refund. You CAN choose to accept a repair, but that is YOUR choice. They cannot insist on it.

The question to be asked is this : do you trust them to repair it properly, or not ? That should determine which path you go down.

EDIT : just seen your latest post. Whne replacing a DMF you should ALWAYS replace the clutch and release bearing at the same time. 90% of the work is already done. In addition, the DMF being worn out will have accelerated wear on the clutch.

Its being replaced by even halshure. Apparently some of there staff use to work for VW. I could think of far worse places to take it I guess.

The car has done over 90k I can imagine the clutch has being well worn so fingers cross they replace it if not I'll just buy the part and hopefully get them to fit it as they will have to take the old one off to get at the fly wheel right?

Anyone have any experience with them? I noticed they don't sell new Volkswagen on there website :/

You have named the dealer, look up reviews about them and make your choice then.

After personal experiences with them about 5 years back, i would get my money back.

REJECT!

I'm not sure I'd 100% agree with the rejection route and it may be harder than you think if the seller claims wear and tear.

However, on the basis that you presumably bought it because you wanted an 07-plate Passat with 90k you could easily go and buy another 07-plate 90k Passat which has either had the DMF done with undetermined bits or will need doing in 6 months time when you'll be paying for it so I can't see it gains you that much.

As long as they do it using the correct LUK part then it isn't rocket science and should be OK. Don't use crap remanufactured stuff.

On the positive side you're better it failing now than in 6 months time.

Yeah I agree. I could reject it and look around for another and potentially end up paying for this all myself or stick with this and have the dealer do it to which they are for free. The clutch is slipping too which I'm going to have them change to. After that I'm going to take it to a vw indie garage and get them to check the quality of the work. I am going to insist that its OEM parts too.

I'm not sure anyone will be able to tell much once it is back together again.

I'm pretty sure there there is only LUK fllywheels available for these which is OEM and the price difference between a genuine or remanufactured clutch only about £40.

It is one of those cases where it will either work properly afterwards or it won't. Ask to see the boxes the parts came in. If it is LUK, Veleo or similar that's fine.

Its being passed to a indie vw garage. Evan halshure told me they wouldn't want to do it as they deal with fords and not vw. It goes in on the 26th now so I guess I'll see. I'll post back with the results
