Hyundai i40 - 1.7 diesel - Oil overfill - TopScot

My car went into a local Hyundai dealer for some warranty work. They carried out a vehicle health check and informed me the oil had been overfilled by 25mm. Just wondering if 25mm is anything to worry about?

Many thanks in advance

I think you need to consider if it has actually been overfilled with oil,or has the oil level risen through the dpf regeneration process?

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have thought of that. The correct leval of oil the i40s is 5.3L. When I carry out the changes I always put 5L to allow extra room in the sump to handle DPF regens.

When doing a DIY oil change, I put in the nominal oil capacity less 2 litres, run the engine briefly to circulate the oil and then top it up to half way between min and max on the dipstick.

Because oil remains in the galleries and coats parts of the engine, using close to the nominal quantity is guaranteed to overfill!

The quoted refill amount should take that into account! Nevertheless I do like you!

Some references give original fill and a different replacement fill but many give just the original fill quantity - nice little earner for dealers, knowing that 8 litres will refill a 9 litre original but still charge the customer for 9 litres!

Our Ceed had a quoted fill of 5.3 litres and after a service would be 1/4" above full on the dipstick.

For the last 2 services I supplied my own oil (1/4 the price the dealer charged for the same stuff) and just left a 5 litre can in the car. That amount would fill it to the correct level exactly.

As said above some gets left behind.
